worth marking.To celebrate(and also to reflect),we asked some of our authors,designers,illustrators and collaborators for a personal responseto the number forty.It turns out that it is a truly itsletters in alphabetical order;Jesus fasted for forty days andnights...  \nAnd it was forty years ago that we published The Comic Talesof Edgar Allan Poe,the first of thousands of titles to bear and thought-provoking.  \nRead on.  \nForty Acre  \nForty Acre was a meadow along the banks of the River Trentthat ran from the village of Kelham to the village of Averhama mile away,and it was our playground.The boys in the tinyschool run by the Fathers of the Sacred Mission at Kelham Hallwent to Forty Acre to walk and bird watch and swim in theriver;and I used to go there to look at clouds and enter theirnames in a chart-cirrus nimbus stratus.  \nOne night in my first term,a plane fell from the sky ontoForty Acre.We prayed for the dead airmen in chapel the nextmorning when we were told Forty Acre was out of boundsbecause the Royal Air Force would be clearing the wreckage.I did not then know what W.H.Auden later taught me,thatabout suffering the Old Masters were never wrong,and thatwhen tremendous events are happening 'there must always bechildren who did not specially want it to happen?  \nWeeks later,when the bodies had been removed and thewreckage had been cleared,we returned to our playground inForty Acre to find it changed forever.We gazed into theplane-shaped crater and thought of men falling from the skyto die here while we slept  \nWe learned to play again
