How do we decide which behaviour is criminal? How do we explain why some people commit crime and how can we use different theories of criminality to explain this behaviour? You will look at different types of crime and public perceptions of crime, gaining an understanding of why some crimes go unreported to the police and media. The second unit, through its focus on criminological theories, allows learners to gain an understanding of why people commit crimes. | In year two, Units 3 and 4 will deepen your understanding of the criminal justice system and you will develop the skills needed to examine criminal cases and review verdicts. You’ ll look at the roles of personnel and processes involved from the moment a crime takes place until the verdict itself is passed. In the final unit, you will apply your knowledge of criminological theories to understand how and why we use punishment within the criminal justice system in order to achieve social control. You will learn how to evaluate the effectiveness of social control agencies, such as the police and prisons, in achieving their aims. |\n| Unit 1 Changing Awareness of Crime The purpose of the unit is to plan a campaign for change relating to crime. The focus is on unreported crime and the consequences of such crimes. The unit also introduces media representation of crime and how campaigns for change can raise awareness of unreported crimes in society. Candidates will apply their knowledge and understanding of the specification to the scenario presented by the unseen assignment brief when the controlled assessment begins. Non-examined assessment: 8 hours Unit 2 Criminological Theories This unit focuses on why people commit crime and includes a study of a range of theories of criminality. External Examination: 1 hour 30 minutes Unit 3 Crime Scene to Courtroom The focus is on the Criminal Justice System from the identification of the crime through to the verdict. This unit will allow you to gain the understanding and skills to be able to examine the validity of verdicts given in criminal cases. Non-examined assessment: 8 hours Unit 4 Crime and Punishment You will apply understanding of theories and processes of bringing the accused to court and evaluate the effectiveness of agencies in the criminal justice system in achieving social control.
