If possible, turn off the lights and demonstrate the darkness that existed beforehand.  \nShow the icons of God creating the world as you guide them through the Bible story. Images can be found through a google search if you do not have the icons at your parish.  \nThen read Genesis 1:1-5.  \nExplain that God created light. Turn on a flashlight or lamp to emphasize this. Explain that God did not only create light, He also created the sky and water, land and plants, and trees and fruit.  \nRead Genesis 1:14-19.  \nExplain that God created the sun, moon, and stars. He also created living creatures in the sky, on the land, and in the sea. God said creation was good, but He also created man and woman, and He said they were VERY GOOD. Explain that just like God created light and man, he calls his disciples to be alight in the world.  \nRead Matthew 5:14-16.  \nAsk how the students think they could be a light in the world. Turn out the flashlight and students dance freely. When the flashlight is turned on, they freeze. If anyone moves, they are out and sit down. Last person standing gets to run the flashlight the next round.  \nTo mix it up play different music styles and speeds or add more than one student with a flashlight so students are required to watch for more than one light to turn on.  \nSupplies Needed: sidewalk chalk if you can be outside, large cutout stars and tape if inside, small stones or coins  \nBefore the lesson use chalk—or cut out stars and tape—to make a hopscotch board that instead of squares has the numbers in star shapes.  \nPlay as you usually would hopscotch: students throw their stone or coin into a star, then hop through the board skipping the star with the stone/coin in it.
