Fee.  \nStudents felt they were being cajoled into paying after theyreceived a letter(fucing)fromProf.Thody concerning medicalcertificates for their year abroad.  \nThe controversy centred on the suggestion that paying the 5fee would save them a large bill for a medical examination.Ithas since been revealed that the necessary certificate for theyear abroad costs only 2.  \nLet's get the facts straight aboutStudent Health,and especially  \nSome students felt they were under increasing pressure tojoin the scheme after a meeting in the French Departmentcovering procedure for the year abroad.At the meeting Mlle.Thyss reitterated her advice to pay the H.S.charge.  \nThe Sick Bay was institutedby the University to prevent thehuge administrative probiemsthat wouid result if sick studentscould not be adeguately caredfor,especially in Exam tame.  \nThey claim that the Department was not simply advisingthem but actively guiding towards paying the charge by pre-arranging medicals at Student Health leaving them with littlealternative in paying.  \nⅢI students living in bedsitsfor example.would have to gohome,thus affecting theirdegrees.Exams wouid have tobe missed as only in Sick-Bayare there adequate facilities forinvigilation.  \nFears were also expressed that making a fuss about thecharges might get students labelled as 'trouble makers'andjoepardise their chance of good references for their yearabroad.  \nHowever,Prof.Thody,Head of the French Dept.,claimedthis was untrue.  \nln the case of Finalists thiscould lead to them oniy beingawarded elassless degrees.  \n\"The letter was in no way meant to pressure students intopaying the charge,\"he said.His intention was only to savestudents money and ensure that they obtained the necessarymedical certificate.  \nThe responsibility for muin-taining a frce Sick Bay must restsoicly on the shoulders of theUniversity Administration.  \nHe claimed that at the time of he letter he was unaware thatthe cost of a medical examination was only E2.He has sinceassured LUU President Sally Ryder that he would make thisclear to the students.  \nSick Bay works ro theiradvantage.as classless degreesboth lower
