Develops a clear definition of “suburb” as a mindset as well as geography, contrasting centrality with urban sprawl and drab residential spaces. because I also was born and brought up in a placethat was not the centre of anything. \nPerhaps it was because Nazareth was a very inconsequential village of nomore than 150 inhabitants that we read in the first chapter of John's gospel: \nPhilip found Nathanael and said to him,'We have found him of whomMoses in the Torah and also the prophets wrote,Jesus of Nazareth, theson of Joseph.'Nathanael said to him,'Can anything good come out ofNazareth?'Philip said to him,'Come and see.'(John 1.45-46) \nNazareth was not a suburb as we would understand it,but it shared at leasta psychological hinterland with modern suburbia. It was not at the centre ofanything. It lacked the frenetic pace of Jerusalem or the other large settle-ments near Jesus'home.Intriguingly,Galilee has a suitably pallid suburbanmicroclimate—often swathed in grey mist and clouds, unlike the sunnyclimate of Jerusalem. \nPerhaps Jesus and his family always felt a bit on the edge of things—alwaysstuck in a place where more interesting things happened elsewhere.Cananything good or grand come out of Nazareth? It probably seemed as likelyfor God among us to emerge from Nazareth as Queen Elizabeth to grow upon a West London council estate.Terry Eagleton in his wonderful book Radi-cal Sacrifice explains that Jesus was a challenge to his countrymen primarilybecause he was so unglamorous: \nJesus was not a member of the sacerdotal caste but an obscure layman,a blow-in from provincial Galilee, probably the son of a stonemason. \nOf course, there are suburbs and there are suburbs. This book is not so muchabout well-organized and well-defined richer suburbs that retain a senseof identity and community, although some parts of it may resonate. We aremainly concerned with suburbs that have perhaps seen better days,or arepart of urban sprawl or that lack a sense of clear definition. \nOne thing, though,is true.Being suburban is as much a state of mind as ageographical location. That is why it is so hard to define exactly what wemean by a suburb. It is more than geography.Suburbs are places that do notfeel at the centre of things;they tend to be part of urban sprawl(even if theystarted life as small villages clustered around railway stations);there canbe an architectural uniformity about them;they are mainly residential
