Hamas, however, said it would surrender its weapons only after a full Israeli withdrawal and an end to attacks on Palestinians. \n• The Lok Sabha passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The Bill requires an order from a firstclass judicial magistrate for births and deaths registered after a delay of more than two years. \n• Around 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Spain’s Ceuta in a single day, with at least 57 people dying during the attempt. Spain blamed trafficking gangs, called it a breach of territorial integrity, and faced a major humanitarian crisis. \n• The Union Cabinet approved ₹84,084 crore for the Samudra Manthan offshore exploration scheme, to be implemented until 2030–31. The scheme aims to drill 60 deepwater wells, acquire offshore data, develop common infrastructure hubs and promote domestic oilfield manufacturing \n• The Union Cabinet approved the ₹5,070-crore Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana to promote floating solar projects with financial assistance of up to ₹1 crore per megawatt. The scheme mandates two-hour battery storage and seeks to overcome land constraints while expanding solar capacity to States with large water bodies. \nKEY PERSPECTIVES FOR EXAM \nAn article titled In Indo-Pacific, the Slow and Steady Growth of Indian Power by Ram Madhav in The Indian Express highlights India’s gradual emergence as a strategic and maritime power in the region. In this context, the following points are noteworthy: \n• India’s engagement with the Indian Ocean Region has intensified over the past decade through sustained participation in ASEAN, East Asia and Quad summits. \n• This growing outreach forms part of a broader Indo-Pacific strategy, a term first prominently articulated by former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2007. \n• Although China and Russia resisted the terminology, India adopted a gradual and inclusive approach rather than an overtly confrontational one. \n• Reflecting this stance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi advanced the idea of a “Free, Open and Inclusive Indo-Pacific” while emphasising ASEAN centrality. \n• Also India’s recent engagements with Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand and Australia have expanded from trade to defence cooperation and maritime partnerships. \n• Going forward, India must leverage strategic autonomy and strong regional partnerships to help build a stable balance of power in the Indo-Pacific. \nAn article titled Beyond MSP: Farmers Need Income, Not Price Support in Indian Express advocates shifting farm policy from price guarantees to sustainable income support. In this context, the following points are noteworthy: \n• Following farmers’ protests, Madhya Pradesh raised summer \nmoong procurement from 25% to 60% of estimated output \nand increased the eligible yield from 1.2 to 3 quintals per acre. \n• Even so, high-yield farmers may incur losses on produce sold beyond the procurement limit at lower market prices. \n• The protests reflect the widening demand for assured Minimum Support Prices beyond rice and wheat to pulses and oilseeds. \n• Such support has economic merit because India remains significantly dependent on imports of these crops. \n• It could also encourage acreage shifts away from surplus cerealsand water-intensive sugarcane towards pulses and oilseeds. \n• However, price-deficiency payments may be preferable to physical procurement, particularly when government grain stocks exceed welfare needs. \n• Ultimately, farm policy should focus on income support through market-linked mechanisms, crop insurance, agricultural research and rural infrastructure rather than relying excessivelyon MSP’s and input subsidies. \nAn article titled A Healthy Tax in The Hindu highlights the need for stronger fiscal and regulatory measures to tackle India’s rising obesity burden.
