It is the act of officially holding or keeping a person in legal custody or confinement, thereby restricting their freedom of movement. It is a temporary legal measure. \no Types: Punitive detention, Preventive Detention. \no Punitive Detention: It is the detention of a person as a punishment for a criminal offence after the offence has been committed and proved in a court of law. \no Intended to punish the offender and deter future crimes. \no Governed by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) . \no Preventive Detention: It is a legal process of detaining a person without trial or court conviction to prevent them from committing an offence (that may threaten national security, public order, or public safety) in the future. \no Does not require a criminal conviction. \no The Constitution of India permits preventive detention under some specific circumstances. \no Permitted under Article 22 of the Constitution and governed by preventive detention laws such as the National Security Act (NSA), 1980. \no Challenges raised by Preventive Detention: \no Detention without trial affects the fundamental right to life and personal liberty under Article 21. \no Courts mainly review the legality of detention procedures rather than the executive’s subjective satisfaction, limiting effective judicial scrutiny. \no Arrest: It is a formal legal process in which a person is taken into police custody because there is sufficient legal reason to believe they have committed an offence or because a court has issued an arrest warrant. \no Arrested person remains in custody until released according to legal procedures, such as bail, court orders, or completion of investigation. \nSex Reversal in Species \nA new study published in Science Advances on wild agile frogs (Rana dalmatina) in Hungary found that climate change-induced sex reversal causes reproductive disadvantages and increases extinction risks. \no What is It? It is a biological phenomenon where an individual organism develops anatomical and physiological sexual traits- including reproductive organs and fertility- that differ from its genetically determined chromosomal sex. \no Reasons: \no Environmental / Thermal Override: Rising temperatures or climate change can suppress key enzymes (such as aromatase) during critical embryonic development periods, turning genetic females (XX) into functional or partial males. \no Genetic & Hormonal Factors: Mutations or dysregulations in sex-determining genes, or artificial administration of androgens/oestrogens (common in aquaculture) . \no Potential Threat: In a population skewed towards one sex, individuals may run out of mates to reproduce with. It will slow in population growth, reducing genetic diversity, and ultimately raising the risk of extinction. \no Most commonly traced species: \no Amphibians- in wild populations like agile frogs, common frogs, and wood frogs, where heatwaves trigger thermal sex reversal. \no Reptiles-temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) is seen in lizards. \no Fish- traced in gonochoristic and hermaphroditic species (like clownfish and groupers), and artificially induced in aquaculture to produce monosex populations (e.g., all-male tilapia) . \no Mammals / Humans-rare genetic conditions cause sex reversal (e.g., Swyer syndrome) . \nBharat VISTAAR platform \nAn article discusses the multidisciplinary applications of AI and how to harness its potential to enhance productivity as the world moves towards an AI-dominated ecosystem. \no What is It?
