Saiz \nUniversity of North Texas Lone Star College \nMichelle Cantú-Wilson Cassandra Rincones \nOutreach Strategists San Antonio College \nAbstract \nThis article examines Latina leadership in higher education through collaborative autoethnography and testimonio, foregrounding the lived experiences of four Latina leaders across instructional and student affairs contexts. We correct a common misreading of the literature: research on Latinas is substantial but often remains in dissertations and non–peer-reviewed venues, obscuring knowledge from mainstream discourse. Drawing on Chicana feminist theory—especially testimonio and nepantla—we analyze how underrepresentation, cultural taxation, and anti-DEI policy climates shape leadership trajectories, with attention to the U.S. South. We thread autobiographical narratives with scholarship to illuminate mechanisms that reproduce exclusion (prove-it-again dynamics, appearance policing, constrained pipelines in Academic Success) and to surface counterstrategies. We offer a concise toolkit for Latina leaders and institutional allies: evolve success metrics across life stages, name and recompense cultural labor, build third spaces, translate equity commitments into outcomes under restrictive regimes, and widen governance pathways. Our findings affirm that Latina leadership—rooted in culture, community, and public purpose—is essential to transforming institutional practice and policy. \nKeywords: Latina leadership; higher education; Chicana feminist theory; autoethnography; DEI; U.S. South \nPlease direct inquires about this manuscript to: Mayra Olivares-Urueta, mayraou27@gm[ail.com.ORCID](ail.com.ORCID) iD: [https://orcid.org/0009-](https://orcid.org/0009-)[ ](https://orcid.org/0009-)0002-0593-805X \nCollege Student Affairs Journal, Volume 43(2), pp. 58-70 ISSN 2381-2338 \nCopyright 2025 Southern Association for College Student Affairs All rights of reproduction in any form reserved. \n59 College Student Affairs Journal Vol. 43, No. 2, 2025 \nto be said about how “family life” is constructed in any context and the often problematic societal norms that shape women’s experiences within it (Anzaldúa, 2002, p. 29). Rather, the focus is on what mother’s must sacrifice to raise our childrenyour children-through our work in higher education be itin leadership or entry level roles. So here I am, a clinical faculty member finding joy in the ways I still make an impact on our institutions, our students, and the Latina leadership pipeline on my own terms.More, Iam here to help provide insights into the seldom published life of Latina leadership in higher education. We are even more unique in that we serve in a variety of institutional types and one of us is now in the private industry working with higher education clients. \nWe situate this piece within collaborative autoethnography and testimonio traditions—centering first‑person, Chicana feminist narrative as knowledge and critique—and we connect these testimonios to current policy climates in the U.S. South.Clarifying the literature, our intent is notto claim a lack of research on Latinas but to echo Burmicky et al.(2024): substantial scholarship exists, much ofitin dissertations and non–peer-reviewed venues, which limits visibility in mainstream discourse. Thus, our intervention is to braid lived experience with research and offer a concise, regionally attuned toolkit. \nThe state of Latina leaders in higher education is dimmer now than when Mamis Rising was published, at least when doing research on these women and in this field. Statistics solely on Latinas working in higher education who are notpresidents are hard to come by.In their systematic review of the literature, Burmicky et al.(2024) noted that community colleges were the intuitional setting where the majority of Latinx/a/o leaders had been studied and that research on Latina ","cbCaihIVrg4ISDba","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihIVrg4ISDba","pdf",192770,13,"English","# Abstract\n# Literature context and visibility in mainstream discourse\n# Theoretical framework: Chicana feminist theory (testimonio and nepantla)\n# Challenges shaping leadership trajectories in the U.S. South\n# Exclusion mechanisms and counterstrategies\n# Toolkit for leaders and institutional allies","[{\"question\":\"How does the article study Latina leadership in higher education?\",\"answer\":\"It uses collaborative autoethnography and testimonio to center first-person Chicana feminist narratives as knowledge and critique across instructional and student affairs contexts.\"},{\"question\":\"What issue does the article identify in the existing research on Latinas?\",\"answer\":\"It argues that although research on Latinas is substantial, it often remains in dissertations and non–peer-reviewed venues, reducing visibility in mainstream discourse.\"},{\"question\":\"Which challenges are emphasized as shaping Latina leadership trajectories in the U.S. South?\",\"answer\":\"The article highlights underrepresentation, cultural taxation, and anti-DEI policy climates, and connects these factors to mechanisms that reproduce exclusion.\"}]","LATINA LEADERSHIP IN HIGHER EDUCATION - Challenges and Strategies for Success | PDF",1792088902,33]
