Subrata’s father took them all to the fair one day, where they stopped to read a poster about Lathi Khela. A lot of other people were reading it too.  \nNitu asked Subrata’s father,”Chacha, what is Lathi Khela?”  \nSubrata’s father replied, “Lathi Khela is avery old game in our country. It’s from the time of kings and jamidars. The jamidars, or land owners, hired lathiyals to use sticks to protect their wealth. Their mastery and almost magical abilities with the sticks slowly turned into a game over time.”  \nAt the fairground the drums began to beat. The crowd grew bigger and bigger. The lathiyals entered the field one by one, following the Sardar. They stand in a circle to start the game and inspect the field.  \nHearing the beat of the drums, Subrata said,“Are you listening Mim? The drum beats are like poetry! Close your eyes and you’ll hear it clearly.”  \nMim and Nitu both closed their eyes. Wow! The drums really did sound like poetry.  \nTwo lathiyals faced off against each other, striking with their sticks to the beat of the drum. As the fight continued, the suspense built. Who would win? Would someone get hurt?  \nThe drum beats stopped. Subrata’s heart was racing. Anybody could get injured at any time. Subrata was too scared to open his eyes. Mim put an arm around him and said, “Why are you so afraid? It’s just a game. Look! Everybody’s fine.”  \nReluctantly, Subrata opened his eyes. Indeed, nobody had gotten hurt. Both the lathiyalis were still fighting a fierce battle.  \nNitu said, “Look, Subrata! The sticks are moving so fast you can’t even see them!”Mim and Subrata really couldn’t see the sticks. The only thing they could see was the blur of nonstop spinning. The sticks looked as thin asa string.  \nFinally, the Lathi Khela was over . Subrata, Mim and Nitu still couldn’t take their eyes off of the lathiyals or their sticks. The whole crowd applauded.  \nLater at the food stall, Subrata was very surprised to see the two lathiyals standing together and eating sesame khwaja.
