When it’s happening, it’s so miserable you think you’ll never forget. But later, inevitably, you do. At least that was what I told myself as I took a long glug out of a bottle of OJ in the snack aisle of the Boise Co-op while my seven-year-old twins stared at me with wide, identical eyes. \n“Grocery store snacking is usually not okay, but today it is,” I said hoarsely, opening a bag of Pirate’s Booty, hoping the distraction of food would erase their suspicions about my uncombed hair, the circles under my eyes. I handed the bag to Alice. She cradled it like a baby she was about to lay away in a manger, but Phoebe greedily plunged in a hand and started munching. \n“Can we get a puppy?” Phoebe asked, sensing maternal weakness.“A puppy would tip me over the edge,” I said. \nThe truth: I had already tipped. \nAs a single mom, I always ended up paying for the rare night out—thus I hadn’t even darkened the doors of a happy hour in months. But this level of grogginess and suffering seemed excessive. I steered toward checkout, swerving the cart to avoid the lane with the checker I recognized from my seventh-grade gym class. (I couldn’t remember his name but could totally picture his pimply adolescent self in polyester volleyball shorts) . For a split second I couldn’t wait to tell my mom how I’d successfully avoided a Stopand-Chat. And then, for the thousandth time, I had the gut-punch realization I’d never tell her anything again. \nNow as I swiped my credit card, I noticed I’d somehow broken a fingernail. My eyes watery, head on the verge of imploding, I wondered: \nWhat the hell was in those drinks? They were a black hole that had swallowed hours of my life. \nAs Alice and Phoebe argued about what they’d name our new imaginary puppy, I silently swore I’d never again surrender to peer pressure from the members of my new pole dancing class. While I’d initially had a better time than expected, I couldn’t go through this again. \nThe girls trailed behind as I pushed our cart through the parking lot. The sky, the snow, the leafless trees, all the color of concrete. The last nine months in Boise had been a blur of misery and grief. How I missed Los Angeles. The sunshine, my hilarious pals, the sense that I was at the center of the comedy world instead of stuck in some remote outpost of civilization. \nWith the twins buckled into their booster seats, I headed to the trunk to load groceries. That’s when a familiar voice called out. \n“Tilly! Tilly!” \nWhen I turned, Layna had appeared beside me.“So good to see you!” she cried.“Last night was killer! Did you have so much fun?” \n“Yeah,” I admitted.“I mean, I feel like death now. But it was fun.”That’s when I popped my trun","cbCaiv19tucKwkmm","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiv19tucKwkmm","pdf",2551277,4,291,"English","en",105,"# One\n## Monday, Presidents’ Day\n# Two\n# Three\n# Four\n# Five\n# Six\n# Seven\n# Eight\n# Nine\n# Ten\n# Eleven\n# Twelve\n# Thirteen\n# Fourteen\n# Fifteen\n# Sixteen\n# Seventeen\n# Eighteen\n# Nineteen\n# Twenty\n# Twenty-One\n# Twenty-Two\n# Twenty-Three\n# Twenty-Four\n# Twenty-Five\n# Twenty-Six\n# Twenty-Seven\n# Twenty-Eight\n# Twenty-Nine\n# Thirty\n# Thirty-One\n# Thirty-Two\n# Thirty-Three\n# Thirty-Four\n# Thirty-Five\n# Thirty-Six\n# Thirty-Seven\n# Thirty-Eight\n# Thirty-Nine Forty\n# Forty-One\n# Forty-Two\n# Forty-Three\n# Forty-Four\n# Forty-Five\n# Forty-Six\n# Forty-Seven\n# Forty-Eight\n# Forty-Nine\n# Fifty\n# Fifty-One\n# Fifty-Two\n# Fifty-Three\n# Fifty-Four\n# Fifty-Five\n# Epilogue\n# Acknowledgments\n# About the Author","[{\"question\":\"What does the narrator discover after reconnecting with someone from her pole-dancing class?\",\"answer\":\"When a class acquaintance comments on how much fun she had, the narrator opens her trunk and finds a dead body with severe, disturbing injuries inside.\"}]","Last Night Was Killer - Mary Pauline Lowry | PDF",1786106357,448,{"code":4,"msg":31,"data":32},"ok",{"site_id":24,"language":23,"slug":33,"title":13,"keywords":34,"description":14,"schema_data":35,"social_meta":78,"head_meta":80,"extra_data":82,"updated_unix":28},"last-night-was-killer-mary-pauline-lowry","",{"@graph":36,"@context":77},[37,53,68],{"@type":38,"itemListElement":39},"BreadcrumbList",[40,44,48,51],{"item":41,"name":42,"@type":43,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":45,"name":46,"@type":43,"position":47},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":49,"name":12,"@type":43,"position":50},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":52,"name":13,"@type":43,"position":20},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/last-night-was-killer-mary-pauline-lowry/129517/",{"url":52,"name":13,"@type":54,"author":55,"headline":13,"publisher":57,"fileFormat":60,"inLanguage":23,"description":14,"dateModified":61,"datePublished":62,"encodingFormat":60,"isAccessibleForFree":63,"interactionStatistic":64},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":56},"Person",{"url":41,"name":58,"@type":59},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-08-27","2026-08-07",true,{"@type":65,"interactionType":66,"userInteractionCount":20},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":67},"ViewAction",{"@type":69,"mainEntity":70},"FAQPage",[71],{"name":72,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":74},"What does the narrator discover after reconnecting with someone from her pole-dancing class?","Question",{"text":75,"@type":76},"When a class acquaintance comments on how much fun she had, the narrator opens her trunk and finds a dead body with severe, disturbing injuries inside.","Answer","https://schema.org",{"og:url":52,"og:type":79,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":58,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":81,"canonical":52},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":24},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":84},[85,88,92,96,101,106,111,116,121,124,128],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":86,"slug":87},90,"story-novel",{"id":47,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":89,"show_sort_weight":90,"slug":91},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":93,"show_sort_weight":94,"slug":95},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":97,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":98,"show_sort_weight":99,"slug":100},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":102,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":103,"show_sort_weight":104,"slug":105},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":107,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":108,"show_sort_weight":109,"slug":110},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":112,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":113,"show_sort_weight":114,"slug":115},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":117,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":118,"show_sort_weight":119,"slug":120},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":119,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":122,"show_sort_weight":119,"slug":123},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":125,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":126,"show_sort_weight":125,"slug":127},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":129,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":130,"show_sort_weight":97,"slug":131},19,"General","general"]
