The article went on to state that “he does more than that: he goes beneath the beauty and shows us the inner meaning where we will finally recognise the face of our incarnate God of surprises and disguises everywhere.” Kavanagh’s invitation resonates with us at this time of the year, when the celebration of the mystery of the Incarnation is still fresh in our minds and, in many ways, it mirrors De La Salle’s insight that reality is most adequately interpreted with the “eyes of faith”through which “we do everything in view of God”and “attribute all to God”. \nAdmittedly, for those of us engaged in education, recognising the educational relationship as a significant place of encounter with the incarnate God, this can be a tough ask as the “immediate” rather than the “reflective” demands attention! In the heat of the moment, it is not always easy to step back and “recognise Jesus beneath the poor rags of the children whom you instruct,” as De La Salle invites his followers in his meditation for the recent feast of the Epiphany. Thankfully, the “poor rags” have, for the most part, long since gone but unfortunately other, more complicated “disguises,” have taken their place in the lives of children today. In consequence, De La Salle’s challenge remains as pertinent as ever for a sensitive educator. \nWhile accepting that it may be a tough ask to embrace these “epiphany moments”, we also know that they can be very transformative as manifestations of the incarnate God. I came across one such transformative story a couple of years ago that took place on a lunch-time London Tube train. As a harassed Mumin a full carriage was trying to deal with a crying baby, the rest of the carriage feigned ignorance of what was happening in embarrassed silence. At the next station, another Mum with a Down’s syndrome child, happily playing with a recently acquired McDonald’s balloon, got on to the Tube. Seeing the crying baby, the child went up to the baby, kissed her, and gave her the balloon with the immediate effect that the child stopped crying as the rest of the passengers dissolved into appreciative smiles.
