Larry L.Hench to Receive Von Hippel Award forContributions to the Field of Glass and Ceramics\n\nThe Materials Research Society's high-est honor, the Von Hippel Award, thisyear will be given to Larry L.Hench “forpioneering accomplishments in the fieldof glass and ceramics including thedemonstration of the first bioactive glasscalled Bioglass®and subsequent expan-sion of the field, demonstration of the fea-sibility of encapsulating nuclear wasteproducts in glass/ceramic matrices, anddevelopment of sol gel processing to pro-duce ultrahigh purity optical and dielec-tric materials with controlled microstruc-tures.\"The Von Hippel Award is givenannually to an individual in recognition ofoutstanding contributions to interdiscipli-nary research on materials. \nHench is currently Professor Emeritusat the University of Florida;professor ofCeramic Materials at Imperial College ofScience,Technology and Medicine at theUniversity of London;and associate direc-tor of the Interdisciplinary ResearchCentre in Biomedical Materials at the Uni-versity of London. After 32 years at theUniversity of Florida,he accepted achaired position at the Imperial College.During his careerHench has worked inthree multidisciplinary fields with impor-tant societal impact:bioactive medicalmaterials, materials for radioactive wastedisposal, and sol gel processing of micro-optics and optical sensors. \nLarry L.Hench \nciplinary studies have also involved thecollaboration and training of biomedicalmaterials scientists from around the world. He has co-authored papers on this topicwith scientists from England,Finland, theNetherlands,Japan,Brazil,China,Germany,Belgium,Italy, and France. When Hench began his work in this newfield,no teaching materials existed.Overthe years he has helped to fill this void, authoring or co-editing six books thatdescribe advances in the field. \nHe also contributed to the commercialdevelopment of Bioglass products,includ-ing two FDA-approved products:Perioglassfor periodontal repair and ERMI for fillingspaces left from tooth extraction, and MEPto replace middle ear bones. \nIn 1969,Hench discovered Bioglass⁸,acompositional range of Na₂O-CaO-P₂O₅-SiO₂glasses,which was the first fabricatedmaterial that bonded to living tissues.Thisdiscovery created the field now known asbioactive materials and has directly benefit-ed millions of patients worldwide.Today, more than 80 laboratories in 20 countriesare investigating bioactive materials for useas medical and dental implants. For over15 years bioactive glasses,ceramics,andglass-ceramics have been used clinically toreplace many different parts of the body, including the middle ear bone,teeth,verte-brae,orbit of the eye, knees, for anchoringof total hip,and for sensory prostheses.Recently,Hench and his colleagues discov-ered that the most bioactive glass composi-tions can also enhance bone proliferation tosuch an extent that it can be used to pre-vent loss of teeth from periodontal diseaseand to stimulate repair of bone in revisionsurgery of failed total hip and total kneereplacement. \nSince 1976,Hench has been active inresearch in the use of glass and ceramicmaterials for storage of nuclear high-levelwaste (HLW).Together with colleagues atthe University of Florida,Hench identifiedand categorized the mechanisms and rateof corrosion of glasses containing HLW,applying for the first time new surfaceanalytical techniques to the problem, including the now-standard Auger elec-tron spectroscopy(AES),x-ray photoelec-tron spectroscopy (XPS),and secondaryion mass spectrometry(SIMS).The corro-sion and HLW leaching of glass/ceramicswas categorized into five types and therates modeled as a function of time,tem-perature,pH,surface-to-volume ratio, andflow rate. \nThese studies led to the development ofthe science of entrapment of HLWs inglass/ceramics.Along with this work,Hench worked actively to help establishpolicies and procedures for the accommo-dation of multiple forms of HLWs for dis- \nThe safety and reliability of
