If they didn't find shelter soon, she was afraid her aunt might not make it to the next day.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>Lark Elliot dearly loved her Aunt Lucy and Uncle Ben. To her knowledge they were the only relatives she had.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>When she was ten years old, her father and mother had been caught in a cattle stampede caused by a summer lightning storm. She had been  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>devastated by her loss.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>The night of their wake, however, new emotions gripped her: fear and panic. She had overheard the neighbor women saying that she would most likely end up in an orphanage. She had heard stories of those places, and none of them good.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>The day of the funeral was gloomy and overcast as the neighbors began to congregate in the yard. She prayed that it wouldn't rain. She didn't think she could bear the sound of raindrops pelting her parents' graves.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>As she sat off by herself, choking back tears, Reverend Stiger arrived, his much-handled Bible clasped in his hands. She had stared, but not at him. Her gaze was glued to the couple who walked in behind him. Although she hadn't seen the tall, white-haired man in four years, she recognized her father's brother immediately. With a glad cry she jumped to her feet and threw herself into her Uncle Ben's welcoming arms.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>\"How did you know?\" she cried, hugging the smiling man fiercely.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>\"We ran into a friend of ours a couple days back, and he told us about Jake and Annie's accident. We came as fast as we could.\"  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>\"I'm so glad you're here.\" She wiped her eyes. Then turning to the small woman waiting behind Ben, she embraced her, adding, \"They were going to send me to an orphanage.\"  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>\"An orphanage!\" Lucy Elliot exclaimed, outraged. \"Your Uncle Ben and I will take care of you, child.\"  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>And so they had. Her own parents couldn't have been sweeter or kinder to her. They had eased the sharp pain of her loss until only fond memories of her mother and father remained.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>But when her uncle took over the running of the farm, she soon realized, even at her tender age, that he didn't plow and raise crops the way her father had. He spent most of his time at a nearby river, passing the day fishing its  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>waters. Either that or he was off in the woods hunting.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>Consequently, the bulk of the farm work had fallen to her and Aunt Lucy. They had been unable to handle most of the heavy work, and in less than a year the bank had foreclosed on the farm. The furniture and livestock had been sold and they had taken off in the farm wagon, pulled by two horses that were no longer young.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>Lark breathed a weary sigh as she remembered the years of traveling through state after state, settling a few months on some run-down farm, then moving on to another one with the same results.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp>There was no getting away from it. Her uncle was a dear man, but a shiftless one.
