Spaced repetition software (SRS) addresses this by applying human memory principles, tracking item-level performance, and adapting review frequency to reduce wasted time while strengthening long-term retention. This paper outlines the theory and implementation behind SRS and then shares practical experience learning Ojibwe, including the strengths and tradeoffs of four major SRS programs. For generations, language learners have turned to a simple but effective tool to help: flashcards. This concept has been modernized and incorporated into software programs that are available on both computers and mobile devices. The best programs involve \"spaced repetition software,\" (SRS) which takes advantage of principles of human memory to optimize the presentation of information and maximize its long-term retention. SRS keeps track of the user's performance on individual items, resulting in more frequent drilling of material that needs more repetition and less time wasted on material that doesn't. The best feature of SRS for language learning is that one can easily \"plug in\" one's own materials to the existing software to study any information that one wants to learn. This paper presents a brief overview of language learning with SRS, starting with an academic overview of the underlying theory and its implementation, but then proceeding to a more personal account of how I have taken advantage of SRS in my own journey to learn Ojibwe. Pros and cons of four leading SRS programs are discussed, and recommendations are given on how best to use existing software options to drill vocabulary and grammar for Ojibwe. This information will be useful to those who wish to use SRS to supplement their own learning, regardless of whether materials exist already or they have to create them themselves. It will also serve teachers who wish to provide ready-made material to their students. \nLay Abstract \nPeople who are learning indigenous languages need to remember hundreds of new words and word forms. To remember it all, they need to practice often. Practicing alone at home every day is very helpful, but people need resources to practice with. Spaced Repetition Software is a very powerful tool for learning languages. You can put your own words into it, and it will adapt to your own knowledge: if you know a word well, you will see it less often, and if you make mistakes, you will see it more. This helps people learn more words in less time. In this paper, I describe how to use SRS effectively, and give specific examples of how I use it to study Ojibwe. I also describe four popular programs for SRS. This information will help people use SRS by studying word lists that already exist, by making their own lists, and, for teachers, making lists that match their classes to give to their students. \nThe Proceedings of the 27th Stabilizing Indigenous Languages Symposium: Language From the Four Directions \nNikakará:’a (Kanien’kéha / Mohawk) \nOnkwe’shòn:’a ionteweiénstha ne Onkwehonwehnéha wentá:on eniakeiá:rake’tewen’niawe’ékhon owennasé’shon tánon tsi nénhshiere’.
