Duh. This revelatory white paper was based on the “8th Annual Gallup Student Poll” where data showed that student engagement falls from 74% in 5th grade to a dismal 34% in 12th grade. This of course is no revelation to any parent, or anyone who can vaguely recall their own high school experience, and it has been a continual challenge for teachers throughout history, including those at Lane Tech. Yet nearly every Laneite can remember a teacher who not only kept them engaged, but hada profound influence on them while at Lane and long after. \nIn our own completely unscientific poll, we asked alumni on Facebook to share their memories of favorite Lane teachers. Many respondents talked about how their favorite teachers prepared them well for future careers. Jim Manley ‘83 echoed the sentiments of several alumni,”Mr. Monteleone, Graphic Arts. Great teacher taught us how to work in the real world. He’sthe reason I’m a printer today.” Mike Spade ’90, concurred,“He was very passionate not only about teaching and printing, but also about Lane Tech. He loved our school and it showed in the ways he taught us and encouraged us. I never had a problem finding a job because of the skills and work ethic I learned in print shop.” Several alumni, including John Tomkiw’79, also mentioned English Teacher Mr. Rogers,“He instilled in his classes a passion for writing and investigating, focusing on the whys, not just the hows, of stories. He was instrumental in setting me on the path to my career as a writer.” Elaine (Archambault) Lombardi ’77 added, “He gave us the ability to manage the Warrior our own way (well, within reasonable limits), and in the early girl-y days, he never put limits on us.” \nStill other alumni felt the teachers who instilled confidence in them and provided encouragement were more influential than mastery of any particular course subject. Marilou Mika Milaschko ’95, appreciated World Geography teacher, Mr. Iacullo, “I not only loved what he did, he truly cared about ‘his kids’ and any time, you could reach out for help in school or help in life. He was always there to listen and to give advice. He treated you like family.” Many participants in the conversation \nalso mentioned math teacher and track coach, Jessie Siebert,“Mr. Siebert was a phenomenal teacher, but also enlightened me on the struggles of being a young African-American male during a time when it was needed and warranted. I made a special dedication to him in my dissertation.” Dr. Devin O. Jackson ’81 . \nIn many cases, it was a teacher’s understanding and response to special circumstances that made a lasting impression on Lane graduates, like with drafting teacher Paul Chase, “My tenure at Lane was stormy because my only goal in life was to become a professional comic book artist. My refuge during that storm was drafting, and Mr. Chase found a myriad of ways to channel my skills, making drafting a beacon in a sea of adolescent turmoil.” Russ Maheras ’73 . Alumni repeatedly noted teachers who went above and beyond the call of duty,“Geometry teacher Mrs. Woods had a tough exterior but a heart of gold. Without her giving up her Saturdays to come in and tutor kids who needed extra help, I never would have passed. She obviously did this without pay, and if I remember correctly she came from Indiana”, Frances Murphy ’90 . \nJohn Jones, ’82 summed it up on Facebook, “taking into account the time span of the comments, the sheer volume of teachers who made strong impacts on the students of Lane is still amazing. Two of my top teachers were Mr. O’Malley and Mr. Gerhke. Both were subtle and fair and made you feel as though you mattered in this crazy world.” \nBut perhaps the ultima","cbCaitAELRZ3mvsz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitAELRZ3mvsz","pdf",1433850,16,"English","# Praise for Pedagogy!\n## Alumni memories of favorite Lane teachers\n## President’s Message","[{\"question\":\"What Gallup study is referenced, and what does it show about student engagement?\",\"answer\":\"The newsletter cites Gallup’s 8th Annual Student Poll, showing student engagement falling from 74% in 5th grade to 34% in 12th grade as graduation nears.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the newsletter compare Gallup’s statistics with Lane alumni experiences?\",\"answer\":\"It contrasts the reported decline in engagement with alumni recollections of teachers who kept them engaged and influenced them during and after Lane.\"},{\"question\":\"What themes appear in alumni testimonials about effective teachers?\",\"answer\":\"Alumni emphasize preparation for real careers, passion for learning, encouragement and confidence, personalized support, and teachers who went beyond normal duties.\"}]","Lane Tech TODAY - Winter 2018 - Praise for Pedagogy! | PDF",1790542874,25]
