Ananthakrishna Sastry. The preface explains the manuscript research foundations begun in 1886, the translation work for Theosophical Society needs, and later wider scholarly attention. It details obstacles in sourcing fragile manuscripts, production history, and revisions leading to a second edition supported by devotees, printing efforts, and spiritual intentions.","LALITA-SAHASRANAMAN \nLALITA-SAHASRANAMAN \n# MANTRAS'ASTRA\n\nLALITA-SAHASRANAMAN \nWITH \n# BHASKARARAYA'S COMMENTARY\n\nTRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH \nBY \nR.ANANTHAKRISHNA SASTRY \n(Third Edition)Revised and Enlarged \nPrinted by D.V.Syamala Rau,at the Vasanta Press,The Theosophical Society,Adyar,Madras. \n可 1a \nPREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION \nAs a Sanskrit student at Bangalore,my attention wasfirst drawn to a Poona manuscript of the Lalitāsahasra-nāmabhāsya in 1886.Five years later, while collectingold Sanskrit manuscripts for the Theosophical SocietyLibrary, where I was the pandit between 1891 and 1902,more manuscripts came into my hands.During thatperiod,I had to translate the Bhasya into English forthe use of the late Dr.Subramania Iyer(then Mr.)whose pandit also I was. And in 1899,it was printedfor the use of the public who,I thought, would be veryfew, belonging to the Theosophical Society and capable ofunderstanding such an abstruse subject drawn fromMantra-Sastras.The difficulties of securing old manu-scripts and the dilapidated condition of those secured, rendered the work of translation very difficult. \nSince then the subject has become very popular dueto increased knowledge in every department and to thepublication of Sir J.G.Woodroffe's works on Tantrasin which my English translations of Lalitasahasranāma-bhāsya and Anandalahari were freely quoted and criti-cised.Then while collecting MSS.for the MysoreGovernment Oriental Library in the next ten yearsunder Mr.A.Mahadeva Sastri,a great Sanskrit scholar,I took special interest in securing the rare manuscripts \n# LALITA-SAHASRANAMAN\n\nreferred to in the commentary.Next I worked for theformation of a Sanskrit Library for the State of HisHighness the enlightened Maharaja Gaekwar of Baroda.Almost all the important manuscripts connected withthe study of Mantra-S'astras are available now in theBaroda,Mysore and Adyar Libraries. Many of thesehave since appeared in print. The Sivasutras frequentlyreferred to for occult doctrine in the commentary es-pecially from names 64 to 84 are printed in the Kashmereseries. The Parasurāma-Kalpasutras on which the wholeTantra works are based are printed in the GaekwadOriental series. And alnost all the Tantrika workscurrent in Vamamārga can be procured in Bengal printedin Bengali character.(For the names of the Tantras,Agamas and Sanhitas see No.17 Gaekwad Oriental SeriesNos.1466 to 1820.) \nThough the demand for this work was very greatfor the last 10 years or so,I could not undertake a secondedition owing to pressure of work. For on the 5thOctober,1922,when I closed my work with the BarodaGovernment, the great Poet Rabindranath Tagore en-gaged me as an Honorary worker to help in forming theVisva-Bharati Library at Santiniketan.Another causefor delay was the financial consideration. The greatoccult work of Lalita could not be made a commercialconcern. The 2,000 copies of my Tamil translation of theSutasamhitā printed a few years back with the help ofthe late lamented Zamindar of Andipatti who wantedto distribute them gratis among deserving devotees,un-fortunately fell into other hands for sale. Then myendeavours to give the proceeds thereof to the Rama-krishna Students’Home at Mylapore, proved futile.I \n# LALITA-SAHAS'RANAMAN\n\nwas anxious that my present work should not meet withthe same fate. \nA few earnest devotees have now come forward, among whom are a ruling chief in Kathiawar and twoMahāranis,to meet the expenses, considoring it a“Punya”to spread the spiritual knowledge, and so wehave together undertaken the work. The sale proceedsof the work after meeting the expenses of printing, etc.,will go to a charitable institution as did the proceeds ofmy English translation of Visnu and Siva Sahasranāmansin the last stage of the sale to the T.S.funds.Mr.Rama-chandra Iyer,a true disciple of that great Yogi, the lateMahā-Svamigal of Sringeri-Math was also urging me tobring out a second edition and offered me his notesprepared under the guidance of that Great o","cbCaipa6fQd40gww","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipa6fQd40gww","pdf",33694479,1,479,"English","en",105,"# Preface to the Second Edition\n## Lalita-Sahasranaman\n## Commentator's Life","[{\"question\":\"Who translated Lalita-Sahasranaman into English?\",\"answer\":\"R.
