Commercial theater constituted the core of the city’s public sphere, one in which middle class playwrights and audiences assumed the leading role. Audience members, based on their attendance, and play critics, based on their reviews, often disagreed about what was‘acceptable’ entertainment for the city’s stages, opening a space for negotiation about representations of everyday life. Over time, women became increasingly important as audience members and as characters in plays. In contrast, Black Argentine men, once central to theater, became increasingly marginalized. Theater practitioners catered to audience tastes. Because theater was so widespread and mass theater regulators were never able to effectively surveille and control live theater. Playwrights and the public took advantage of this relative freedom to push back against elite ideology and expectations,  \nthus, expanding the parameters of the public sphere and ultimately contributing to its democratization.  \nIn-process publications:  \nBook chapter,“Performance, 1830-1930,” Ana Otero, A Cultural History of LatinAmerica, Bloomsbury.
