It was the end of stone crab season and he collected his catch, sold the claws to the vendors, brought in and stowed the traps. He showered and changed. Ate a little. When dusk came he went to the Neptune Bar to sit and have a beer, drinking the first one quickly, then ordering another. The bartender, Wallace, brought him a tall glass of whiskey with the second beer.  \nWhat’s this?”  \nIt’s for you, Bobby. From her.  \nWallace nodded down the bar where a woman sat: middle-aged, clean and well-dressed, well-kept, thick black hair tucked neatly behind her ears where there were silver earrings. She had olive skin. Bobby had spotted her when he first walked into the Neptune because she was not from here, because she was an attractive woman.  \nBobby King waited until she looked at him, then nodded. He held up the whiskey glass.  \nThe woman smiled at him. It was a drunken smile. Bobby didn’t care. He did not get many smiles from women, drunken or not, at least not in the Neptune. Not in Everglades City. Besides, she looked to be about his age—a little younger, no doubt. As he looked, there was something about her, some mystique . . . or maybe it was only because she was a stranger. Or, that she had smiled at him. Or, the mystery was that she would buy him a drink. She was only a little drunk, Bobby decided, and she could buy him a whiskey if she wanted to.  \nHe drank a little from his glass, said thank you, and returned to his beer and his own business. Then Darryl Boles entered the Neptune.  \nDarryl was a large man, a round man, perpetually dirty. He stood in the doorway surveying the usual crowd. He caught Bobby’s eye. Bobby gave a slight nod and Darryl Boles came over, sitting down next to him, blocking Bobby’s view of the woman.  \nHey, Bobby.  \nDarryl.  \nYou drinking whiskey now?  \nBoles was a Gladesman, a good one, respected for his skills by many but also often shunned. He lived in a trailer just out of town—along a  \ncreek that led to the Barron River—but spent the majority of his time in the sawgrass or out in the Ten Thousand Islands. He fished and hunted. Farmed clams. Smoked fish. Was a state licensed alligator trapper. Like a lot of the men in Everglades City, he liked to fight. Darryl Boles was also a gay man—everyone knew it—and that wasn’t easily accepted in a rugged town like Everglades City, especially among his outdoorsmen peers. And Darryl was very fond of Bobby—keen on him, as the other Gladesmen put it—which had made Bobby uncomfortable for a long while. But Bobby was no longer troubled by it, figuring that Darryl was who he was.  \nIt’s good whiskey, but I didn’t order it.  \nDarryl nodded but seemed confused. Wallace brought Darryl his usual beer. Bobby said nothing more, waited until Darryl understood what had been said. The round man looked around the bar, his eyes settling upon the only stranger—almost the only woman—in the Neptune.  \nDid she buy it for you?  \nSo I was told, Bobby said.  \nDarryl Boles glared at Bobby, took up his beer, and went to sit by himself at the window. Bobby shrugged. He looked over again at the woman and saw that she was looking back at him.  \nAren’t you going to thank me? she asked.  \nI did, Bobby said.  \nOh. You did.  \nShe was quite drunk, he could tell, as she stood and came over to him, carrying her drink, resting her free hand on the backs of the stools along the way. She sat where Boles had been, next to him.  \nYou don’t mind, do you?  \nNot at all.  \nShe was an unusual woman for Everglades City. Dark-skinned, mannered. She had a slight accent that Bobby could not place, an ethnicity he could not decipher. Her neck was slim and sleek, heavy breasts, a figure rounded by age yet rounded in the right places.
