It highlights the strategic deception employed by the Portuguese king, who attempted to illicitly acquire Columbus's maritime maps and charts to launch his own expedition. The narrative recounts the failed secret voyage caused by severe weather and the subsequent departure of Columbus to Spain. When he had learned all, and had stolen the maps and charts which Columbus had made, he secretly \nsent out a vessel and ordered the captain to follow closely the route that Columbus had marked out. \nThis was a mean trick, and no wonder it did not succeed. A great storm arose. The waves rolled high and tumbled and broke above them mountains high. The thunder rumbled and the lightning flashed. Terror-stricken, the sailors turned homeward. A more miserable crew never sailed back to Lisbon than this crew sent out by King John II. \nColumbus, disappointed with the King, took his little son, Diego, with him, left the country, and went to Spain. \nQuestions: \n1. Who reigned as king of Portugal at this time? \n2. What did John II do with the maps and charts of Columbus? \n3. What happened to the vessel that was sent out by John II? \n4. Where did Columbus take his son when he left Portugal? \n5. Imagine that you are Christopher Columbus, trying to find a financial backer for your voyage. How might you react to John II’s actions? Explain.","cbCainVgHlyhZlgM","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainVgHlyhZlgM","pdf",381738,"English","# King John II of Portugal and Columbus\n## Historical Deception and Maritime Exploration\n## Questions for Critical Reflection","[{\"question\":\"Who reigned as the king of Portugal during the period described in the text?\",\"answer\":\"John II reigned as the king of Portugal during this time.\"},{\"question\":\"What deceptive action did King John II take regarding Columbus's plans?\",\"answer\":\"King John II feigned interest in supporting Columbus's plans while secretly stealing his maps and charts to launch a rival expedition.\"},{\"question\":\"What was the outcome of the secret vessel sent by King John II?\",\"answer\":\"The vessel was forced to turn back to Lisbon after encountering a severe storm, which terrified the crew and rendered the mission a failure.\"},{\"question\":\"Where did Columbus relocate after his disappointment with the Portuguese king?\",\"answer\":\"Columbus left Portugal and traveled to Spain with his young son, Diego.\"}]","King John II of Portugal and Columbus - Period of Discovery | PDF"]
