One spring, King David sent his commander Joab to lead the Israelite army against the Ammonites. But David stayed in Jerusalem.  \n2 Samuel 11:1  \nOne afternoon, King David walked on the ̎at roof of his palace. As he looked over the city, he saw a beautiful woman bathing in the courtyard of her home.  \n2 Samuel 11:2,  \nDavid sent a messenger to ̊nd out who she was. The messenger said,“She is Bathsheba, and her husband is Uriah the Hittite.”  \nUriah was one of David’s greatest warriors. He was ̊ghting the Ammonites with Joab and the army.  \n2 Samuel 11:3, 7; 23:39  \nKing David sent messengers to bring Bathsheba to the palace, and he slept with her. Then she returned home. Later Bathsheba sent David a message,“I’m pregnant.”  \n2 Samuel 11:4-5  \nKing David sent for Uriah. He wanted Uriah to sleep with Bathsheba so Uriah would think the baby was his own. But Uriah was a faithful soldier and slept by the palace gate. He refused to go home while other soldiers were at war.  \n2 Samuel 11:6-13  \nSo David wrote a letter to Joab, saying,“Put Uriah in front where the battle is the worst. Then command the soldiers to pull back from him so he will be killed.” And Uriah delivered the letter to Joab. Joab obeyed, and Uriah was killed.  \n2 Samuel 11:14-17  \nWhen Bathsheba heard that Uriah was dead, she mourned for him. After her time of mourning, David sent for Bathsheba, and she became his wife. Later she gave birth to a son.  \n2 Samuel 11:26-27  \nBut God was very displeased with what David had done.
