opportunities for the UCC to set the record straight.A statementand film review by the Rev.Thomas E.Dipko, executive vice president of theUnited Church Board for Homeland Ministries, was picked up by many mediaoutlets. And a letter published in The New York Times from the UCC Office ofCommunication pointed out that the Court ruling in the Amistad case was arallying point for abolitionists. The letter was prompted by an op-ed piece inThe Times claiming the case was unimportant in the struggle to end slavery. \nHere is the Good News of theUnited Church of Christ, especialledited for congregational publi-cations,with topical news of thewider church, helpful hints tostrengthen members'faith and pridein the denomination and personaltestimonies to stir the spirit.Eachstory is short and complete andcan stand alone, ready to dropinto the weekly bulletin or themonthly newsletter. The code atthe end of some enties refersinterested readers to a more compre-hensive story in United Church News. \nThe case helped solidify a loosely organized effort into a unified group thatin 1846 formed the American Missionary Association and took the antislaverymovement mainstream:The work of the A.M.A.,America's first human rightsorganization, continues today in the programs of United Church Board forHomeland Ministries. \nMeanwhile,The Bergen(N.J.)Record published a letter from formerUnited Church Board for World Ministries executive vice president, the Rev.David M.Stowe, commenting on the historical accuracy of the film. The lettersaid that Steven Spielberg failed to show the role of faith as the motivatingforce in setting the captives free.It was a Yale Divinity School professor whotrudged the docks of New York looking for someone who spoke the Mendelanguage, not the defendants'attorney as depicted in the movie. It was alsodivinity school students who taught the Africans English, and it was a group ofProtestant businesspeople and clergy who formed the Amistad Committee. \nCUBAN CHURCHES ALIVE ANDWELL—Contrary to the impressiongiven by the press, the church inCuba is not suddenly becomingresurrected just because of the papalvisit, says the Rev.David Vargas, secretary for Latin America and theCaribbean with the UCC/DisciplesCommon Board for Global Minis-tries. \nPLAY BALL WITH US—The new hotel rising behind UCC national officesand financed by the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries as aninvestment has already booked its first guests.Seven major league baseballclubs that play the Cleveland baseball team have agreed to bunk their playersthere. It helps that the general manager of the hotel is former Clevelandsecond baseman,Vern Fuller! \n“Churches in Cuba have beenholding religious services over allthese years,\"says Vargas.\"But theyhave not been holding open rallies inpublic squares. And they have notbeen doing social service workbecause that has been thegovernment's role.\" \nWonder if the hotel will ever be filled with World Series fans? \n# WILL CLONING BRING US CLOSER TO GOD?—Scientist and entre-preneur Richard Seed wants to clone people.“God intended for man tobecome one with God,\"he says.\"Cloning and reprogramming of DNA is thefirst serious step in becoming one with God.”\n\nBut UCC theologian-ethicist the Rev.Ronald Cole-Turner calls suchnotions “outrageous.” \nTo learn more about the churchin Cuba, check out a new video fromthe UCC Office of Communication,“Church and Revolution.”Throughthe eyes of retired UCC minister, theRev.Ted Braun, the video looks atthe humanity of the Cuban people, and at what has happened to thechurch since the Cuban revolution. The 70-minute video is $39.95(pluss&h),and is available from
