Triggered by the realities of severe injuries and long recoveries after deployments, the fund provided immediate financial aid, meal vouchers, and travel assistance, while also recognizing lasting emotional and logistical needs. forever.During his third deployment toIraq, his vehicle had struck an improvised explosivedevice, and the blast severed both ofhis legs fromthe knee down. \n\"Hey,Dad is down but he's not out. We're goingto be OK,and it's going to take me a while to getback up on my feet—but once I do get back up onmy feet,I'm not going to be deploying anymore.Be patient, let me get better and we'll get throughthis,\"Lind,now a retired master sergeant, recallstelling his children. \nHis wife,Lisa, took a leave of absence fromwork and was by his side for the entirety of his45-day stay, but their four children remained homeat Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton,Calif.,where Lind was assigned to Ist ReconnaissanceBattalion. The separation took a toll on the entirefamily,he recalled with raw emotion in his voicemore than a decade later. \nBy alleviating many of the stressors that easilycould have overwhelmed Lind during that time, the support provided by the fund allowed him tofocus solely on his recovery—and it worked.Justtwo months after his injury,he took his first stepson prosthetic legs. \nAnd that's when Semper Fi Fund—a nonprofitorganization dedicated to providing immediatefinancial assistance and lifetime support to combatwounded, critically ill and catastrophically injuredservicemembers—stepped in and provided thefunds for his children to traveltwice from Californiato Bethesda and back.It was a gesture that Lind \n\"Iam largely successful because at a very crucialtime Ihad a strong foundation ofsupport,\"said Lind. \nDuring his hospitalization,Semper Fi Fundhelped the family pay their bills, gave them mealvouchers and ensured that his wife, who was nowtaking on a new role as caregiver, had the supportshe needed. And nearly 12 years after his injury, \nAbove:MSgt
