We are constantly engaged in some form of activity, even if it’s just thinking. This inherent need for action is ingrained within our nature. Karma, the Sanskrit word for action, signifies the ongoing cycle of cause and effect that governs our lives. \nStruggle and peace are inherently incompatible. To attain eternal peace, one must transcend the cycle of struggle. Karma, by its very nature, is entangling. It creates bondage and traps us in the repetitive cycle of birth and death. \nWhile we cannot escape karma entirely, as it is the fabric of our existence, we can strive to break free from its entangling effects. The path to liberation lies in approaching karma with a detached and selfless attitude, as advocated in the Bhagavad Gita. \nSwami Vivekananda, the great patriot and prophet of the nation, delved into the profound teachings of Karma Yoga, a concept that emphasizes the spiritual significance of work. His insightful lectures, compiled under the title “Karma Yoga,” provide a practical guide to performing actions without getting caught in the web of karma. \nInspired by Swami Vivekananda’s teachings, weare organizing this contest to empower young people to transform from ordinary workers into Karma Yogis. By understanding and applying the principles of Karma Yoga, they can attain masteryin their work, unleash their true potential, and become highly efficient and productive individuals. \nEngaging with Karma Yoga will not only elevate their professional lives but also lead them towards spiritual freedom, the ultimate goal of human existence. \nWe invite all young people to actively participate in this contest and immerse themselves in the transformative teachings of Swami Vivekananda. The contest is being conducted by Aaryajanani Trust in collaboration with Ramakrishna Math, Hyderabad, with the aim of disseminating Swami Vivekananda’s life-giving message to the youth of Bharat. \nDr. Anupama Reddy For Aaryajanani Trust \nKARMA IN ITS EFFECT ON CHARACTER \nThe word Karma is derived from the Sanskrit Kri, to do; all action is Karma. Technically, this word also means the effects of actions. In connection with metaphysics, it sometimes means the effects, of which our past actions were the causes. But in Karma-Yoga we have simply to do with the word Karma as meaning work. The goal of mankind is knowledge. That is the one ideal placed before us by Eastern philosophy. Pleasure is not the goal of man, but knowledge. Pleasure and happiness come to an end. It is a mistake to suppose that pleasure is the goal. The cause of all the miseries we have in the world is that men foolishly think pleasure to be the ideal to strive for. After a time man finds that it is not happiness, but knowledge, towards which he is going, and that both pleasure and pain are great teachers, and that he learns as much from evil as from good. As pleasure and pain pass before his soul they have upon it different pictures, and the result of these combined impressions is what is called man’s “character”.
