PREFACE\n\nTHE COMPLETE CANTATAS,as contained in the“GESAMMTAUSGABE” \nThe Name “Cantata\"”is Italian-something which is sungand is used to denote a certain type of composition viz.recitatives, solor arias, orchestral interludes.Carissimi(1606-1674)mentions this form of composition first,as\"Cantata da chiesa,\"Church Cantata. \nBACH composed his cantatas over a period of forty years, viz.his first one in 1704,and his last in 1744.He came toLeipzig in the year 1723 as Cantor(Choirmaster)of theThomas Church, and brought with him some thirty composedbefore. At Leipzig it was his duty to provide music for allthe Sundays and Principal Festival days of the ChurchYear, some 59 occasions. He composed 5 complete cyclesfor these 59 times him self or the astounding total of 295cantatas-but in order not to repeat himself too often, hehad also to copy the works of other composers. Therefore, many of the manuscripts found later on and attributed toBACH were not his at all.The mere physical feat of writ-ing down his cantatas, oratorios, organ, calvier, and instru-mental music, etc.is so tremendous that one can hardlyunderstand how BACH with his teaching and conductingcould do all this. \nThe Cantatas served a particular purpose in the ChurchLiturgy, viz.to underline the Gospel for the day.Luther, who initiated this Service, almost followed a Roman Mass-beginning with a Kyrie and a Gloria in Excelsis sung bythe Choir. After then the“Epistle”was read,a hymn suit-able for the occasion sung by the congregation and then theGospel was sung from the altar. It is at this point that theCantata was sung, the libretto of which was based on thegospel text,as far as possible. This was followed by asermon, and then HOLY COMMUNION which brought to anend the service. It lasted from 7 in the morning to noon, and therefore the Cantata was a welcome relaxation forthe congregation. \nTHE SECULAR CANTATAS \nThe Secular Cantatas are constructed in the same style asBACH's Sacred Cantatas, except for the absence of Chorals.BACH did not-as was the case with the Sacred Cantatashave to provide music in secular style throughout theyear, but only for special occasions. Therefore, the numberof secular cantatas is small compared to the Sacred can-tatas.About 40 are mentioned by title, though only aboutone half are in existence. \nThe occasions for these cantatas were generally the pre-sence of some prince, mayor,or other public persons,wed-dings,and Public Events and Ceremonies where music wasdesirable. As for example: \nDer Zufriedengestellte Aeolus was written to cele-brate the name day of Prof.August Friedrich Muellerby his students. \nVereinigte Zwietracht was performed to honor Dr.Gottlieb Kortte's appointment as Professor of Law. \nPhoebus &Pan was written for performance byBach's Collegium Musicum. \nDie Wahl des Hercules was written on occasion ofthe birthday of the Crown Prince of Saxony. \nToent Ihr Pauken,in honor of Queen Maria Josephaof Austria. \nAuf Schmetternde Toene for the name day of Augus-tus Ⅲ of Poland. \nPreis Dein Gluecke:for Augustus Ⅲ of Poland'sanniversary. \nSchleicht Spielende Wellen:for the birthday ofAugustus Ill and in the presence of his queen. \nThere are other Cantatas which are nowadays performedoften as the “Coffee Cantata”and the.\"Peasant Cantata,”“Angenehmes Wiederau,Schwingt freudig Euch empor,”Weichet nur, betruebte Schatten,OHolder Tag,OAngenehmeMelodei,Vergnuete Pleissen stadt, and others. \nBruchatuck aus der Solocantate „Ich habe
