Through a narrative introduction and structured chapters, the book develops a theory of elitism and its discontents, links political outcomes to communication and technology, and evaluates whether democracy has been perfected. It also contrasts antipopulist proposals with populist grievances, addresses Covid-19 as a revealing case, and concludes with synthesis and key arguments about governance.","[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nDedication \nTo Theodore \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nEpigraph \nUnfortunately, the current ruling class is uniquely ill equipped for reform, having become one of the worst of its kind produced in history. \n—Patrick Deneen, Regime Change \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nContents \nCover \nTitle Page \nDedication \nEpigraph \nIntroduction: The Call \nChapter 1: A New Theory of Elitism and Its Discontents \nChapter 2: The Only Alternative to Organic Elites Is Rule by \nthe Worst \nChapter 3: Communications Technology, Not Elite Failure \nChapter 4: The Perfection of Democracy? \nChapter 5: Antipopulist Solutions to Populist Complaints Chapter 6: Giving the Devil His Due: The Case of Covid-19 \nChapter 7: A Developing World Exception? \nChapter 8: Synthesis \nAcknowledgments \nNotes \nIndex \nAbout the Author \nAlso by Richard Hanania \nCopyright \nAbout the Publisher \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nIntroduction: The Call \nOn a Wednesday afternoon in August 2023, I was at a diner with my family. We were on our way to a vacation in San Diego from our home just outside Los Angeles. After I got up to leave the table, I noticed that I had received a voice message from a New York City number. A reporter from the Huffington Post had called and wanted to talk. When I saw that the same journalist had DMed me on X, I realized what was going on. The reporter had discovered that between 2009 and 2011, I had written racist, misogynistic, and generally misanthropic essays under a pseudonym. I had been one of the intellectual founders of what was already then called the“alt right,” a movement that would shoot to prominence with the rise of Donald Trump in 2015 and 2016 and lay the foundation for much of what American conservatism would become over the next decade. \nBy the time I received that voicemail, I had moved from the fringes to the mainstream. In 2013, I graduated from the University of Chicago Law School, and five years later received a PhD from UCLA. I had then gone onto land an academic position at Columbia University, followed by one at the University of Texas. Yet as of summer 2023, I wasn’t planning on staying in academia much longer, instead making my way as a public figure. My byline had appeared in the most prestigious publications in the country, including each of the three most prominent American newspapers: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. I had been on national television, and was honored to be regularly cited by thinkers I had admired for decades. \nThis looked like it was all about to end. I went back to sit with my wife, son, and daughter, not knowing whether our lives would ever be the same again. When faced with a tough situation, I did what many men do. I hid what was going on from my family and pretended nothing was wrong. The next two days were something of a blur. At the San Diego Zoo, I received calls from various people I knew—tech entrepreneurs who had praised my work, politicians, editors who had published my articles, and others—telling me that a journalist was seeking comments about my past writings. One of those contacted was Professor Carlos Carvalho, who had hired me atthe University of Texas, where I then had a position as a research fellow. Each one promised that they would not denounce me, and it would soon become clear that they had kept their word. \nThe story dropped Friday afternoon as we were at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. I had taken my son on a moon-walk simulation ride. He had recently turned four and was just old enough to put on the headset, so I spent our time together wondering whether he actually believed me when I told him we had gone into space. Not long after, I started getting another batch of calls and texts. The article had been published. The messages from friends and well-wishers were the same: Don’t apologize. Stay defiant. I had one friend who reached out and wanted to brainsto","cbCaivHGm1xD3xC9","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivHGm1xD3xC9","pdf",2922563,12,1,295,"English","en",105,"# Introduction: The Call\n## Chapter 1: A New Theory of Elitism and Its Discontents\n## Chapter 2: The Only Alternative to Organic Elites Is Rule by the Worst\n## Chapter 3: Communications Technology, Not Elite Failure\n## Chapter 4: The Perfection of Democracy?\n## Chapter 5: Antipopulist Solutions to Populist Complaints\n## Chapter 6: Giving the Devil His Due: The Case of Covid-19\n## Chapter 7: A Developing World Exception?\n## Chapter 8: Synthesis","[{\"question\":\"What central idea does Kakistocracy propose about ruling elites?\",\"answer\":\"It argues that the current ruling class is uniquely ill equipped for reform, due to the incentives and qualities that have shaped it over time.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the book connect democracy to elite performance?\",\"answer\":\"It questions whether democracy has truly been perfected, suggesting that elite failure and institutional dynamics prevent meaningful reform.\"},{\"question\":\"What role does technology play in the book’s analysis?\",\"answer\":\"A dedicated chapter links outcomes less to elite intentions and more to communications technology, implying that information systems influence political change.\"}]","Kakistocracy -
