\nFOREWORD \nCompetition Days \nThe first lessons in any·Scheme for JuniorSchools must necessarily be of Infant Roomstandard, which is the case in the first stagesof this book. \nThese days are a special feature of the book.I suggest that a handwork lesson towards theend of each term should be devoted to acompetition, when the children make some-thing with little or no help from the teacher. You will find suggestions for the CompetitionDays for the first year on page 34,and forthe second year on page 64. \nAs the lessons progress,it will be seen thatmany of them are direct developments ofthose the children had in the earlier years, with the subjects now chosen to suit theinterests of the older child. \nThe main innovation in the book is theintroduction of actual crafts. The foundationsarelaid for book craft, leather craft, puppetry, and basketry.A little weaving is done, but isnot developed systematically like the othercrafts owing to the prohibitive cost of equip-ment and the difficulty of supervision in largeclasses. \nThe work in this book is spread over twoyears, each divided into three terms.Somelessons are chosen to suit the time of year, some to link with other subjects in the cur-riculum,and others are concerned with moregeneral topics. \nA wide variety of new material is used, butwhenever possible scrap material is made useof to keep down costs. \nMeasuring \nBy the time the children come to this stage, their handwork will involve some measuring, which is a difficult thing for young childrento do accurately. It will be seen throughoutthe book that this problem is eased by simplerule-of-thumb methods which the childrenthemselves use. This enables them to spendthe maximum part of the lesson doing theactual handwork instead of in a time-consuming struggle to follow each step of anarithmetical measurement. \nThe Competition should be mentioned tothe children several days beforehand,other-wise much time will be wasted on the actualday trying to inspire them. This will givethem time to bring some scrap material fromhome—empty cotton reels, empty boxes, pieces of material—and to arouse their par-ents'interests and co-operation.It will helpto prepare the children if you show themfrom time to time some small object madefrom scrap material and mention other thingsyou could have made with the same materials. \nI think it is a worthwhile incentive if thereis a small reward for the children who, inyour opinion, deserve it—not necessarily forthe best objects as such, but for those intowhich a lot of careful work, thought or efforthas gone. \nAs the work improves—that is,on laterCompetition Days—it is a good idea to asksomeone of importance to judge—perhapsthe head teacher. This not only lets the childfeel there is an additional factor in that par-ticular lesson, but also gives the head teacheran opportunity to see what has been done. \nLeave the children to get on with their ownwork, and do some of your end-of-term jobs.I always found that ifI was busy, the childrenwere too. \nI.S.A. \nCONTENTS \nSECOND YEAR \nFIRST YEAR \nAutumn Term \nAutumn Term \nPageLessonPageI Book Cover5I Book Cover
