sciences, natural science, andarts and letters.I taught natural science for twenty-six years, from 1965 to 1991.These science courseswere at first mandatory for every student, but thenit was determined that only non-science majorsshould take them.We were not teaching introduc-tory science courses, but courses in the nature andhistory of science. It was a challenge because most ofour students hated science for one reason or another.Only a few were prepared to enjoy this type ofeduca-tion. \nThe courses I taught were for freshmen and overthe years I learned a lot about eighteen-year-oldstudents—their thoughts, aspirations, and unpre-paredness for college life. For years,I told friendsstories of what happened to my students and me,andthey always laughed. Finally, they convinced me towrite down those stories. This is a complete shift in \nwriting for me because my previous books coveredserious subjects such as the origins of genetics andthe myth of human races. \nSome of my stories are funny, some are sad, andsome are both.I hope you like them.In any case, remember that they date from the twentieth centurywhen the cell phone and the internet did not exist. \nYou might find that the title of my book is strange, but it came from the following story. \nIt was the first day of class, and I was teachinga course with another instructor in front of 240students.My colleague was a woman twenty yearsmy junior. She decided to introduce both of us tothe class by saying,\"I am Dr.Marinez, and this isDr.Corcos.We are going to teach you about sex andgenetics.Dr.Corcos is too old;he cannot rememberanything about sex,so I am going to take the sexpart, and Dr.Corcos will teach you genetics.” \nI cannot think of a better way to break the icebetween faculty and students!","cbCaisbugf83dDTP","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisbugf83dDTP","pdf",2000729,94,"English","# Preface\n## Teaching background and course focus\n## Student experiences and
