the story presents Esther as winning a beautypageant.A Jewish orphan from unfortunate circumstances, she rises tobecome the Queen of the Persian Empire. She then lives happily ever after.AJewish Cinderella,if you like. \nYet as we read the narrative more closely,we find some more disturbingelements. For example,God's people are not even described as doinganything religious, like praying.Over the centuries,Christian readers havealso found it hard to understand the book. How do we evaluate the actions ofthe Jewish main characters,Mordecai and Esther? What are we to make of allthe killing at the end of the book? What has a Jewish festival that celebratesthis event—Purim—got to do with Christians today? \nUnderlying these issues is a more pressing question:where is God?He is notnamed even once in the entire story \nWhat we will find as we read and reflect on the book of Esther is that God isnot absent, but hidden. And as the\"coincidences\"in the book pile up,we areleft with the conclusion that it must be God's hidden hand behind the seriesof dramatic reversals that lead to His people's deliverance \nMay God grant us fresh insights from His Word in the book of Esther.Insightsinto His ways as we live outside our Promised Land,in a world where Heoften seems absent.Insights into how we can live wisely as His people,in aworld that is often hostile. And perhaps most of all,a fresh appreciation of Hisfaithfulness to us in Jesus,in whom we've received the greatest deliverance. \nTo God be the gloryPeter Lau \nWe're glad you've decided to join us on a
