I’d gotten the last train out to the coast, leaving from King’s Cross, changing at Darlington and Middlesbrough, and joining the Esk line at Grosmont to follow a route similar to Mina’s. After a chilly and rickety ride, I stepped out onto the frosty platform at Whitby Station. Late-night revelers laughed and stumbled around me, tempting me with their steaming take-away containers. Outside, Station Square was awashin orange streetlights, and icy stars wheeled overhead. \nAnd then something strange happened: an imbalance, an unsteadiness, like that which comes when a receding wave sucks the sand from under your feet, like it wants to draw you out with it. Being in Whitby is like moving through the sea. Like slipping and catching yourself and then falling anyway – falling and never landing. \nI’ve been here before, I thought. \nI hadn’t, of course. This would be the first of many visits. When I found my feet again, I looked across the River Esk, where the town of Whitby rose to meet the Church of Saint Mary, illuminated in yellow and white at the top of the East Cliff. Behind St. Mary’s, something loomed in the dark, something I couldn’t make out. I tried to focus on the contours, tried to carve shape from shadow, tried to see what I knew was there: Whitby Abbey. \nI took a few steps toward it. I could go there now. But the hour was quite late, and I turned instead to find my room for the night. I walked without a map, and the words resurfaced: I’ve been here before. \nThe next morning dawned bright and cold, and the cliffs toward Sandsend were fiery pink against the blue November sky. I watched them warm for along time from my window at 6 Royal Crescent before walking down to the beach. When I got there, Whitby Sands were empty of both people and water. The tide was far out, and the plunging breakers misted along the horizon. I shed my boots and socks, hiked up my skirts and heavy wool coat, and dashed out through the constellation of glassy blue tidepools and trickling rivulets to find the North Sea. It waited for me there, along way off and breathtakingly cold. The crash of the surf against my legs threatened to knock me over and, in drawing back, it insisted that I follow. The distance from the water’s edge back to the memory of hot coffee and dry feet seemed eternal. The sea had me, and like Mina, I did not want to ","cbCaism7IPqtVQ9b","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaism7IPqtVQ9b","pdf",25289730,76,"English","# Mina-Dracula's Destroyer - Editors: Allison Hartman Adams, James Bacon, Chris Garcia\n## Editor’s Note: My Bradshaw’s\n## Train Fiend\n## Mina and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen\n## Why Mina Writes\n## Batman/Dracula (1964)\n## Dracula Lives\n## Molested, Murdered, Maligned: In Defense of “Poor Dear Lucy”\n## I Was Legend: Alberto Breccia, Dracula, and the Argentinian Military Dictatorship\n## Batman & Vampires\n## Dracula By the Numbers\n## Dracula: Then and Now-The Borgo Pass\n## Enditorial\n## A Brief Note from Chris","[{\"question\":\"Journey Planet #87 focuses on what main topic?\",\"answer\":\"This issue focuses on Dracula, with multiple essays and commentary connected to Mina, Whitby, and vampire portrayals across media.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the theme of the editor’s narrative “My Bradshaw’s”?\",\"answer\":\"It recounts a Whitby trip inspired by Dracula, describing the eerie sense of place, the connection to Stoker’s text, and reflection on why Whitby matters in the novel’s infection route.\"},{\"question\":\"Which articles address Mina and her role in the Dracula story?\",\"answer\":\"The issue includes “Mina and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” and “Why Mina Writes,” alongside Dracula-focused editorials and analyses.\"}]","Journey Planet - Issue 87 - November 2024 | PDF",1791326041,29]
