\n# ANTHONY FROM STATEN ISLAND\n\nSpring had come to New York again, and I was on lunch break, crossingfrom the west side of Fourteenth and Sixth to the east. All around mea seasonal rush of new faces flowed and, mixed in with those faces, were the old and familiar—people I'd seen around the Village for yearsbut never spoken to.All that was the good news. The bad news wasthat, even though I was gainfully employed,I was too broke to buyanything but a McDonald's 99-center for lunch. \nAh,McDonald's.Try as you might, there's not much you can sayabout one McDonald's that you can’'t say about another:one moreMcDonald's like one more Starbucks—one more link in a corporatechain no different from—that is,mostly the same as—each and everyother link, link after link. \nI met Anthony from Staten Island in McDonald's.He was sittingwith a small boy at a table near the window, popping a French fryafter another down the boy's hatch. They seemed like two links in achain—Anthony and this boy—and soon,as I got to know Anthony,he'd confirm that they were in fact uncle and nephew. \nWhat seemed to be a man and wife were plopped down at thetable too.Though heavy-set,they seemed like two more links in thechain, and they were clearly happy about the way the beautiful boyand beautiful man were getting along.I say beautiful boy when, infact,I remember very few specifics about the boy—except that he wasbeautiful,fair-haired,and tow-headed. \nSTEVEN CORDOVA \nNow,Anthony.I do have specifics on Anthony. \nWeighing about 150 pounds,he wasn’t that much taller than I ambut he was more sinewy.I could see that just by the tightness of hisforearms, the network of veins running down the length of his sun-browned limbs to his square, muscled hands. He had a full head ofbrown hair which he wore on the longish side. Was it rushed back orand parted in the middle?I can’t remember now. \nI paused on my way out, pretending to be amused by this atomicdisplay of familial love. And that was when Anthony turned andnoticed me.Right off I could see he was smart, smart enough topretend to be amused in return;smart enough, first chance he got, toturn again—and to wink at me. \nI put my right hand down on the table when no one was lookingfull on at me.It was a gesture which I hope suggested,\"So long, folks—nice making a connection with you.”Then I walked away.Iwalked away cool. But quick. \nPeople will tellyou that you're wasting your time with the Anthonies ofthe world, and undoubtedly they're right. But what they're not tellingyou is that you can just as easily waste your time in a“real”relationship.Or that you can waste your time having no relationship at all. \nThe first stab at intimacy I got from Anthony was an email. He'dfound the card I left on the table—as I could only hope he would—when no one was looking, and he said that since we were probablygoing to \"freak,\"he supposed he
