1774,apple trees grew all around his town.As a boy,he drank apple cider and ate apple pies and applecobblers and bit into crisp, juicy apples. \nHe often took a few apples in his pockets when he wentwalking in the woods around his house.Johnny loved walkingthrough the forests, watching how the birds and animals livedand studying the plants that grew.He learned how to sit still,so that the animals wouldn't be afraid of him. \nHe loved books, too. He loved to read and then to sharewhat he learned with others. \nAs Johnny was growing up,many people were moving west.By the time Johnny was a young man,he decided to go west, too, but there were no apple trees there. How could peoplesettle in a wilderness without any apple trees?Johnnydecided to fix that! \n4 \nHe went to an apple cider mill and asked,“May I have allyour apple seeds?” \n\"Sure,if you pick them out yourself,\"the press owner said. \nSo Johnny gathered the seeds, cleaned them, sorted out thebest ones, and put them in a linen bag.He carried the bagwith him on his journey west. \nHe didn't carry much else. Some books,of course.A pot tocook in.He never carried a gun. He'd learned how to live inthe woods and get along with the animals of the forest whenhe was a young boy.Besides,he didn't eat meat. \nJohnny settled for a while in Fort Pitt,on the Ohio River. Here he planted his apple seeds and started an orchard. \nSettlers going west often passed his house with all theirbelongings and admired his apple nursery. He offered to sendapple seeds and seedlings along with them,so that they couldhave apples, too. \nBut settlers were busy and worried.Apple trees weren't themost important things on their minds.Johnny realized that ifthere were going to be apple trees out west,he was going tohave to plant them himself. \nHe walked all over Ohio and Indiana, which in those dayswere covered with wild forests.Everywhere he went,he plantedapple seeds. He also read to the settlers and shared what heknew about the plants and animals in the forests around them.He didn't ask for much in return. He didn't need much.Whathe loved was planting and tending apple trees, reading andsharing knowledge with other people, and walking.","cbCail5qmBvKOC7Z","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCail5qmBvKOC7Z","pdf",2107219,"English","# Early life in Massachusetts\n# Journey west and planting\n# Fort Pitt orchard and sharing seeds\n#
