When God instructs Jonah son of Amittai to preach against Nineveh, highlighting its great wickedness, Jonah deviates from the divine path. He travels to Joppa, finds a ship bound for Tarshish, pays the fare, and embarks, aiming to escape the LORD's presence. During the voyage, a fierce storm threatens to break the ship apart, causing the sailors to fear greatly and appeal to their gods, while jettisoning cargo to lighten the vessel. Amidst this chaos, Jonah descends below deck and falls into a deep slumber. The narrative explores themes of obedience, divine intervention, and the consequences of evading God's will, setting the stage for Jonah's eventual encounter with the great fish and his subsequent surrender to God's purpose. The story emphasizes the importance of heeding divine instructions and the pervasive power of God over all creation, including the turbulent seas and the hearts of men.","Jonah Learns to Obey God \nJONAH 1:1–3:10 \nEnglish Spiritual \nCopyright © 2004, Kartidaya \nYou may not use this work for commercial purposes. But Jonah didn’t want to go to that city to tell them God’s message. He knew if the people of Nineveh stopped doing evil, God would not carry out his plan to destroy the city. \nFinally, after several events in his life, Jonah followed God’s instruction. \nOne day the LORD spoke to Jonah son of Amittai. He said,“Go to Nineveh, that great city, and speak out against it; I am aware of how wicked its people are.” \nJonah 1:1-2 \nBut Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. \nJonah 1:3a \nHe went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. \nJonah 1:3b \nAfter paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD. \nJonah 1:3c \nThen the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god.
