\nAberdeen's Fittie folk have long been known for theiraloofness from the rest of the city, even in time of warregarding themselves as above the roles —ordinary andextraordinary—of their countrymen. \nHence the story that one night a rather odd characterknocked on the door in the North Square at Footdee andasked for Mr Baxter. \n“Aye,that's me”said the householder. \nWhereupon the stranger launched into:\"The moon shinesbright on the water tonight but the Rose of Tralee is not on theDee she must be all at sea and the white foam screens theshores of foam.\" \nThe householder looked at his visitor for a minute and said:\"Na na.It's nae me ye wint —it's Baxter the spy,he bides atNumber 23.” \n* * * * * \nA Fittie man advertised a pedigree Cairn terrier for sale andtwo prospective customers—one from Stonehaven and onefrom New Jersey —arrived at his door, together. \nThe Stonehaven man offered 15 and the American C20. \n\"Nah,I canna beat'at\",said the man from the Mearns:“215 ismy limit.” \n\"Sold\",said the man fae Fittie and off happily home went theKincardineshire chiel. \nAs he left the American asked:\"How come you sold the dogfor 5 less than I was bidding?” \n\"Easy”,said the Fittie fellow:\"The dog can walk back toAiberdeen, but it canna sweem the Atlantic.” \nRusky business!
