co-operation between writers in all coun-tries,in the interests of literature, freedom ofartistic expression, and international goodwill. \nThe author of this book is a member of the P.E.N.,but the opinions expressed in it are his personalviews and are not necessarily those of any othermember. \n# FoRFRANK O'CONNOR\n\n# John Millington Synge\n\n工 \nCYNGE has now been dead long enough to allow even hisSown countrymen to approach his work without partisan-ship or apology.Though a gentle man,and one who carednothing for faction or politics,he was fated to arouse bitterantagonism, and to achieve an unpopularity in his own countrysuch as can never befall an artist for his art's sake alone.Yethe cared for nothing else:and his case shows once again that, while the public will forgive a man for attending only to whathe thinks important,he must not ignore what is importantto them. \nⅡ \nSynge was born in 187I,of an old Wicklow family.By theend of the century he was in Paris, ill, very poor, doing hackwork for various journals. He met W.B.Yeats,who in ahappy moment urged him to return to Ireland, and seekinspiration there. It was at the time of the Irish literaryrenascence, when a number of cultured Irishmen werelabouring to create a national art.Synge went to the AranIslands.Almost at once he began to write with authority, andby 1903 he had entered upon the six years of creative life towhich his fame is due. \nIn 1907 his Playboy of theWestern World was attacked on thegrounds that it libelled Ireland.Synge, who had written oflife as he saw it,was bewildered and,for a time, despondent. \n# John Millington Synge\n\nHis disease grew worse. At last he began to work upon atragedy based on early Irish legend, but he died before hecould finish it,thereby presenting literature with yet anotherriddle of unfulflment.“Had he finished Deirdre as he intended,”says Yeats,\"we should have had a masterpiece.\"In his otherwork, however,Synge fulfilled himself sufficiently to makehim one of the completest personalities in literary history;forhis short creative life, when Deirdre is left out,was the develop-ment of a single phase from start to flower and conclusion.Deirdre was the beginning of another. \nⅢ \nHere,having briefly outlined Synge's life,I come upon adifficulty. An essay of this kind, which aims at giving in abrief compass the essential quality of its subject, and affordsno leisure for detailed examination,is open to one seriousobjection:that it cannot represent that subject as well ascould a series of judiciously selected passages from his work.Yet such quotations,in the nature of things, must be cut down:leaving me with the uneasy knowledge that, whatever I maysay,Synge himself could say much better. \nFor these reasons,I shall chiefly aim at sending readers toSynge himself.I shall attempt, not to \"place\"him,but to indi-cate the enjoyment which his work affords. The classificationgame, and that activity known to its practitioners as“scientific”criticism, attractive and scholarly though they may be,tendsometimes to blind our eyes to
