\nJOHN DEWEY’S PHILOSOPHY \n# EspeciallyTHE QUEST FOR CERTAINTY¹\n\n工 \nTR.DEWEY himself lists his volume on THE QUESToB CBDTATNTy as the eleventh and the lateet of hieFOR CERTAINTY as tne eleventh and the iatest of nis\"principal publications.\"Among the main topicsthat have previously engaged his attention are:the schooland society, ethics, the influence of Darwin, psychology, democracy and education, logic, reconstruction in phi-losophy,human nature and conduct, and the public andits problems.Coming at the end of such an array ofnotable studies, the volume on THE QUEST FOR CERTAINTYis valuable as a somewhat encyclopedic summary of themall. \nII \nDr.Dewey's style of writing in his later works is dif-ficult.He himself attributes this to the influence of thegreat transition in his life from absolutism to his presentexperimentalism. On this point he writes:\"The marks, the stigmata,of the struggle to weld together the char-acteristics of a formal theoretic interest and the materialof a maturing experience of contacts with realities alsoshowed themselves, naturally,in style of writing andmanner of presentation.During the time when the \n100 \nschematic interest predominated, writing was compara-tively easy;there were even compliments upon the clearnessof my style.Since then thinking and writing have beenhard work.\"On this point, however,it may be re-marked that some absolutists, like Hegel, have writtenobscurely, and some experimentalists, like James, havewritten lucidly. So the question of Dr.Dewey's style, which has kept his books from a reading proportionateto their importance, remains somewhat of a problem. \nIII \nSpeaking in general terms,it may be remarked at theoutset that Dr.Dewey's QuEST FOR CERTAINTY might moredescriptively be called:TRYSTING WITH UNCERTAINTY.The reason is,the quest is futile because there is in ourworld no certainty to find. The quest leads to no con-quest. \nThe sub-title of this treatise is:“A Study of the Relationof Knowledge to Action.\"The general position main-tained on this point is the pragmatic one that knowledgeis_secondary in time and importance to action which isprimary;that is,we know what we do and we do not dowhat we first know. The basic thesis of the wholeargument is:Man's mistaken desire for certainty, whichhe can't have, has led him to separate knowledge fromaction, which he should never have done This is thevoluntaristic tradition of Rousseau,Kant,Fichte, andSchopenhauer rather than the intellectualistic positionof Hegel, the Cairds, and Royce.(Not that Dr.Dewey isany man's disciple.)The act,the event, change, areprimary. In the beginning was the Act. \nThe main argument in the book may be summed up inthe following eleven propositions: \n(1.There is no escape from peril. \nAdams and Montague,op.cit,p.17. \n2.Philosophy's search for the immutable has endedin failure. \n3.In the conflict of authorities between science andreligion, science is to be accepted.· \n4.The
