JoHN CoMPANYSECOND EDITION\n\nRules of Play \nIn John Company, players assume the roles ofambitious families attempting to use the British EastIndia Company for personal gain. The game begins inthe early eighteenth century, when the Company has aweak foothold on the subcontinent.Over the courseof the game, the Company might grow into the mostpowerful and insidious corporation in the world orcollapse under the weight of its own ambition. \nJohn Company tells the story of a state-sponsored trademonopoly.Unlike many economic games, playersoften do not control their own firms.Instead, they willcollectively guide the Company by securing positionsof power and attempt to steer the Company's fate inways that benefit their own interests. However, theCompany is an unwieldy thing. It is difficult to doanything alone, and players will often need to negotiatewith one another. In John Company, most everything isup for negotiation. \nUltimately,this game isn't about wealth;it's aboutreputation. Each turn some of your family membersmay retire from their Company positions, giving themthe opportunity to establish estates and compete in theLondon Season for favorable marriages and powerfulpolitical and commercial opportunities.Critically, players do not have full control over when theseretirements happen.Players will often need to borrowmoney to best capitalize on their good fortune. \nJohn Company engages very seriously with its theme. It is meant as a frank portrait of an institution thatwas as dysfunctional as it was influential.Accordingly, the game wrestles with many of the key themes
