position.Close study of his writings reveals the whole diversity ofthe intellectual currents of his age:Enlightenment,Sen-timentalism,Classicism and Romanticism. It would none-theless be an error to seek to follow in Herder an unbro-ken line of development from the spirit of Enlightenmentthrough to Romanticism. The two ostensibly diametricallyopposed attitudes cross and intertwine frequently in hiswork:this in itself is inconsistent and full of obscurities. An idea which emerges in a flash of inspiration,a start-ling,ingenious phrase can suddenly shatter the imagewhich one thought one had created of Herder. We wholive 150 years after his death are not alone in finding itdifficult to understand him:even in his lifetime, when hewas applying for a professorship in Göttingen the Theolo-gical Faculty, when asked about his orthodoxy, declaredthat the lack of system in his writings and their un-orthodox mode of expression prevented a definite endorse-ment. \nThe profusion of ideas which stirred Herder gave himno time to check the precise accuracy of his statements. \nFar removed from the cool, detached style characteristicof many writers in the 18th Century,he wrote anemotional prose, saturated with interpolated, exclamatoryand interrogative sentences.Frequently his pen could notmaster the flood of ideas which rushed over him.For allthat Herder's sentences have more evocative
