Today we're talking about something that all actuaries can relate to, actuarial exams. In particular, we're talking about preparing for actuarial exams—not just reading notes and writing practice, but how we can leverage technology and even artificial intelligence tools to help us prepare for our actuarial exams. \nJoining us for this discussion is Jeff Yang, a U.S.-based actuary and Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) . Jeff combined his passion for technology, coding, and education and built the Actuarial Nexus—which he'll tell us a bit about later—an online platform to help actuarial students learn and prepare for their exams. He's implemented several generative AI features on the platform, with the goal of making Gen AI a viable tool for actuarial exam preparation. Jeff, welcome to the show! \nJeff Yang: Thanks for having me. Glad to be here. \nJulia: So, Jeff, as a fellow actuarial educator, I'm really looking forward to this discussion. I understand that you use Gen AI to create course material and write practice questions and solutions a lot, so I'm sure your insights today will be helpful for students as well as for educators. But first, I want to start with the question I ask all of my guests, Jeff, and it's this: how do you use your actuarial superpowers to make a difference in the world? \nJeff: Yeah. So I would say my actuarial superpower, compared to maybe the profession as a whole, is that I embrace failure. So I actually seek failure, I'm very risk-seeking. \nJulia: Wow. Love it. \nJeff: Which is not typically actuarial, because I think there's something inspirational about just getting knocked down and not giving up, and just pushing through until you overcome your challenges. So I would say my superpower is I am a really good failure. \nJulia: I reckon that's probably a great character trait to have if you want to be an actuary, because most of us fail actuarial exams as we go through. \nJeff: Yeah, there was one exam that took me like three years to do four attempts, but over overcoming that was like, it felt really good to overcome that. You know, failing along the way didn’t feel that great, but the joy from passing on the fourth attempt just overwhelmed the three failed attempts. \nJulia: Yeah, it would feel even better than if you just passed on the first go, I guess. \nJeff: Yeah, probably. \nJulia: So this embracing failure—was that something that was part of you and your personality before that experience, or was it something that you learnt throughout the process? \nJeff: I think that’s a good question. I think it’s a combination of both. I think that one exam did teach me a lot. It also gave me a lot of confidence in myself. So right now, I do mostly startup stuff, so I geared away from the traditional corporate path. But I think that experience with failing that exam three times and then finally passing gave me the confidence to know that I could overcome failure \nInterview Transcript Guardian Actuarial 1 \nand sort of had the conviction to pull myself out. So it’s probably just a combination of my experiences and also just a part of me growing up. \nJulia: Yeah. That's a great superpower, Jeff. I love that. So you mentioned startups—you’re in startups. I know you did some pricing for Medicaid for a long time, and now you are running the Actuarial Nexus. For those who aren't familiar with it, can you tell us a little bit about that? \nJeff: Sure. It's an exam prep platform for the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) exams—mainly U.S. and Canada exams. Currently, we offer three exams and are just working on more. It’s really a technology-heavy platform. So there are aspects of gamification, AI, lots of practice questions, mock exams—all the features you'd see in a tech platform. It just applies anew perspective to it, because for the SOA and CAS exams, there are really a co","cbCairb3AEcWNcDq","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairb3AEcWNcDq","pdf",180446,"English","# Interview Transcript\n## Introducing Actuarial Exam Preparation with AI\n## Embracing Failure and Building Confidence\n## What Actuarial Nexus Offers\n## Why Technology Matters: Scalability, Refinement, Innovation","[{\"question\":\"What is the main purpose of Actuarial Nexus?\",\"answer\":\"Actuarial Nexus is an exam prep platform for Society of Actuaries and Casualty Actuarial Society exams, mainly for U.S. and Canada candidates, with multiple exams and plans to expand.\"},{\"question\":\"How does Jeff Yang describe his learning superpower?\",\"answer\":\"He emphasizes embracing failure, actively seeking it as part of a mindset that helps him persist until overcoming difficult challenges.\"},{\"question\":\"Why does Jeff Yang think technology is important for actuarial exam learning?\",\"answer\":\"He highlights scalability to reach more people, refinement of education through feedback and social dynamics, and innovation through modern learning features and new approaches.\"}]","Jeff Yang - Interview Transcript - AI in Actuarial Education with Jeff Yang | PDF",1790488551,18]
