she walked into a book Iwas writing. The book was later published by Harper andRow under the title Look Through My Window. It is about agirl called Emily Blair, and when Kate arrived the eveningbefore school began and stood in the shadows on Emily’slawn,I thought she was just another minor character.I alsoimagined that Ihad created her and would remain in controlof her.I had a lot to learn about Kate. \nSince that first meeting, she, with the strong support ofmy editor Ellen Rudin, made me turn two manuscripts intoone novel, with herself anything but a minor character.I soenjoyed writing her poems in Look Through My Windowthat she gave me the privilege of writing down lots more ofthem as she thought them up.This led to her persuading meto write,at her dictation, the first draft of another book-length manuscript. That took us three days!It was in thefirst person and she called it Kate. Then she left me,exceptfor dropping by to criticize, while I spent a year rewriting it.Kate was also published by Harper and Row.You'd think \nthat would satisfy her.Not my Kate! Now she has me aidingand abetting her in having her poems published in thisseparate volume. \nI love Kate, which is why I give in to her so often.Yet thestrange thing about our relationship is that, while I knowher almost as well as I know myself, she is Emily's friend, not mine, and she lives in a world I write about and watchbut cannot enter.I tell myself that her world would not existif it were not for me.After all,her poems are written downin my handwriting. They are written from
