Analysis of the Contemporary Aesthetics \nin the Works of Atsushi Ookubo \nAbstract \nThis article examines the works of Atsushi Ookubo within the framework of contemporary Japanese Gothic culture, emphasizing the role of the carnivalesque in Gothic aesthetics. Inspired by Julia Round’s Gothic Critical Model of Comics, this study proposes an adapted model of comic book analysis that considers the cultural specificities of Japanese society. The analysis explores how Japanese Gothic manga incorporates Halloween aesthetics, the interplay of the sacred and the profane, and themes of gender fluidity and queer rebellion. These elements not only subvert conventional Gothic tropes but also reflect the syncretic and performative nature of Japanese subcultural practices. \nKeywords \nGothic, Shounen Manga, Carnivalesque, Atsushi Ookubo, World Upside-Down \nIntroduction \nThis article aims to present Atsushi Ookubo’s work within the context of modern Japanese Gothic culture, demonstrating how the Gothic style is depicted in 21st century Japanese shounen comics (shounen manga) through the works of this renowned mangaka. The primary aesthetic aspect discussed is the carnivalesque element in contemporary Gothic aesthetics. In Japanese society—predominantly conservative and deeply valuing traditional aesthetics—the evolving Japanese Gothic movement popularizes nonnormativity, hybridization, and the inversion of established norms. In this context, cultural glocalization can be understood as a form of subtle rebellion. \n* SWPS University in Warsaw (Faculty of Humanities in Warsaw) \nEmail: [tokyoaftermidnight@gmail.com](tokyoaftermidnight@gmail.com) \nThe Gothic aesthetic (which I discuss in detail in the theoretical framework chapter) in Japanese shounen manga has evolved into a distinct form: ironic, open-ended, self-consciously campy, and carnivalesque—with a strong presence of exaggeration and excess. These elements are particularly vibrant in Japanese Gothic, fostering the development of unique individual aesthetics, such as Ookubo’s, which inspire both local and global communities to further experiment with the form. \nI regard Atsushi Ookubo’s artwork as emblematic of contemporary Japanese Gothic, encapsulating dominant aesthetic trends within the Japanese Gothic community. This study focuses on themes specific to shounen manga and contemporary Gothic in tandem, as only through their intersection can we discern the unique character of Japanese Gothic manga—at times similar to, yet in many ways distinct from, Gothic traditions in Western comics. \nAtsushi Ookubo’s works have been published since 2001 (Ookubo 2001), with his most recent manga series concluding in 2022. All of his comic series blend shounen manga and Gothic aesthetics, establishing a distinct standard for the shounen Gothic style in Japan. Ookubo is not merely an artist who incorporates Gothic elements into his manga—he uniquely positions Gothic themes as a central focus of his artistic endeavors. His manga distinctly reflects a deliberate and nuanced engagement with the complexities inherent in Gothic aesthetics. For this study, I have read all of the analyzed comics in their original Japanese versions and compared them with the English (American) translations. However, this analysis does not focus on linguistic details. Rather, my primary interest lies in how the Gothic—originating in the West—is reinterpreted within shounen manga, with particular emphasis on the Gothic carnival trope. \nComics and Cultural Context—the Method \nIn Gothic in Comics and Graphic Novels, Julia Round (2014) explores the connections between comics and the Gothic tradition from historical, formal, cultural, and textual perspectives. She examines the influence of Gothic structures, styles, and themes on contemporary comics, par","cbCaioc1rFtZ5ttk","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaioc1rFtZ5ttk","pdf",530019,"English","# Introduction\n## Comics and Cultural Context—the Method","[{\"question\":\"本文研究的核心对象是谁？ \"}]","Japanese Shounen Gothic and the Carnivalesque - Analysis of the Contemporary Aesthetics in the Works of Atsushi Ookubo | PDF"]
