smal-ler ship pushes ahead to test the depth, while her crew and passengers scan theshore for a suitable mooring. Then thelead ship sights a wooded peninsulajutting into the channel and she nosesher way to its shore, signaling theothers to follow. \nBy such means the Discovery led theSusan Constant and Godspeed toJamestown 360 years ago.In the un-earthly glow of sunset they tied theirbows to overhanging trees and pre-pared to land their 104 passengers andcargo next day.England's flag—the redCross of Saint George on a white field—brightened the gloom of the pine forest. \nThus was born King James HisTowne, now known as Jamestown.Small as it was,it was to revolutionizeEurope as the beginning of Englandoverseas.Lord Bryce,British politicalscientist and statesman, called its plant-ing one of the epic events in the life ofman. It was the beginning of the Amer-ican era in world history. \nThe securing of the beachhead wasno easy achievement.Thousands ofEnglishmen lost their lives to establisha foothold in the swamp. Its careerwas the commencement of the Ameri-can success story—from crude begin-ning to great power.Jamestown wasAct I—The Challenge. \nIn reality there were four James-towns. \nThe first, centering in the three-cornered fort which the settlers beganwhen they streamed ashore on May 14,was the critical twelve years from thelanding until the end of military ruleunder Governor Samuel Argall in 1619. \nThe second was the period of demo-cratic growth begun by Governor SirGeorge Yeardley in 1619 and continu-ing until the capital was moved to Mid-dle Plantation(Williamsburg)in 1699. \nTHE FIRST SHIPS:Reconstructed for the 350th anniversary of the landing atJamestown(1957),the merchantmen Susan Constant and Godspeed (left and center)and the pinnace Discovery are moored in the James River o short distance fromJames Fort.(Photogroph by A.Aubrey Bodine from THE FACE OF VIRGINIA) \nThe third was the two-century spanin which Jamestown reverted to wilder-ness and all but disappeared, from 1699to 1893. \nThe last Jamestown is the islandwhich a group of patriotic women be-gan to reclaim from the forest in thatyear.Today it is a national historicpark, visited by more than a half-million people each year. \nIt is the first, the primitive,James-town which most excites the imagina-tion.This is the Jamestown which wewill describe here. The vision of city-bred Londoners felling giant pines tobuild a palisadle against Spanish andIndian warriors quickens the pulse ofarmchair adventurers. For ten years thecolony's life hung by a thread.Once,in 1610,settlers actually abandonedthe accursed spot and sailed for home, only to get word before they reachedHampton Roals that Lord de la Warr(Delaware)*was arriving with settlersand supplies. \nThis first Jamestown took formquickly, once the pioneers came ashoreon May 14 and began to stake out thefort which was to be England in Ameri-ca.From the beginning it was clear thattoo many of the 104 had come foradventure rather than work.Of the 92frst settlers whose names survive,49were \"gentlemen\"rather than thelaborers, farmers, and artisans whowere needed. While half the companystripped to the waist to fell trees andclear underbrush, the rest shrank fromhard work. \nThe colonists [ollowed the writtendirections of His Majesty's Council forVirginia, which suggested a site about40 miles upriver from the VirginiaCapes for security against Spanishmarauders. \nThe fort they built was a large tri-angle surrounded by a moat. Its riverside was 420 feet long and its othertwo sides 300 feet.At each corner wasa bulwark built \"like a half moon,\"on which four or five pieces of artillerywere mounted. From the rear bulwarkflew England's flag. \nTo reduce the labor of hauling cargo, the fort was placed close to the shore.A dock was later built fr","cbCaigNABPsak78U","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigNABPsak78U","pdf",2920333,16,"English","# Jamestown: Capital of an
