BALDWIN \nJames Baldwin(1924-1987)was the greatest American essayist in the sec-ond balf of the twentieth century. His nonfction collections, especiallyNotes of a Native Son,Nobody Knows My Name, and The Fire NextTime, perfected a unique style of maximum tension which yoked togethertwo opposites, tenderness and ferocity. In Baldwin's bands,as in Orwell's,the essay lost its stigma of benign, bellletristic coziness and became a matterof life and deatb \nRacism was Baldwin's central theme;he used it as a searchlight to un-cover the world's sorrow and the failure and persistence of love.Though anambitious novelist(Go Tell It on the Mountain,Giovanni's Room,An-other Country)and playwright,Baldwin left bis most lasting literaryachievement in bis essays. \nHe began as a boy preacher in Harlem, and bis writing style was clearlymarked by the rolling-voiced,call-and-response excitement of the African-American church. The otber dominant influence was the qualifying burrow-ing,analytical prose of Henry James—and,by extension, the bigh style ofNew York quarterlies such as Partisan Review, which he mastered at a precocious age.His essays seem a battleground between these early infuences:the analytical and the oracular. Some of the weakest passages occur whenBaldwin starts sermonizing without a proper argument to back him up,bul-lying bis readers, say,to love one another more.Still, there is somethingadmirable about bis always reaching for a bigber emotional pitch. \nBaldwin's apocalyptic book-length essay The Fire Next Time created agreat stir when it came out.It now seems a masterpiece, but it also marksthe beginning of the tendentious rodomontade that was to mar bis laterwork. The longer that Baldwin, who emigrated to Europe, stayed abroad, \nthe more rhetoric be seemed to need to paper over bis weakening grasp ondaily American life. And yet,if bis later essays fall off, they still containmore stimulating bits and interesting passages than almost anyone else's.Bravely, maybe foolhardily,Baldwin challenged the notion of the well-madeessay with expanding galaxies(\"No Name in the Street,”\"The Devil FindsWork”)that keep shooting off in different directions, collecting eloquence, digressions, and juicy subthemes even as they ultimately fail to cobere. \nNotes of a Native Son \n工 \nN THE TWENTY-NINTH OF JULY,in 1943,my fatherdied. On the same day,a few hours later, his last child was born.Over a month before this, while all our energies were concentrated inwaiting for these events, there had been,in Detroit, one of the bloodiestrace riots of the century.A few hours after my father's funeral, while helay in state in the undertaker's chapel,a race riot broke out in Harlem.Onthe morning of the third of August,we drove my father to the graveyardthrough a wilderness of smashed plate glass. \nThe day of my father's funeral had also been my nineteenth birthday. As we drove him to the graveyard, the spoils of injustice,anarchy,discon-tent,and hatred were all around us.It seemed to me that God himself haddevised,to mark my father's end,the most sustained and brutally disso-nant of codas. And it seemed to me,too, that the violence which rose allabout us as my father left the world had been devised as a corrective forthe pride of his eldest son.I had declined to believe in that apocalypsewhich had been central to my father's vision;very well, life seemed to besaying, here is something that will certainly pass for an apocalypse untilthe real thing comes along.I had inclined to be contemptuous of myfather for the conditions of his life, for the conditions of our lives.Whenhis life had ended I began to wonder about that life and also,in a newway,to be apprehensive about my own. \nI had not known my father very well.We had got on badly, partlybecause we shared,in our different fashions, the vice of stubborn pride. \n[588] \nWhen he was dead I realized that I had hardly ever spoken to him. When he had been dead a long time I began to wish I had.It seems tobe typical of life in America, where op","cbCaiiLR0NxZ9zsv","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiiLR0NxZ9zsv","pdf",2565460,"English","#
