Highway past Courtenaytowards Campbell River,one of the smaller patches of housefrontsand corner store that suddenly appear out of the bush and as sud-denly vanish again is a place called Merville.Its very existence ishardly noticed,much less the quaint irony of its name,by passingcars and camper-loads of tourists.Pronounced by its native residentsalmost as a West Irishman would pronounce marvel,its road-frontlies well back from the sea,doubly confusing the literal French of theperson who named it.Tiny,rural,ironically christened,Merville,British Columbia,might seem unlikely to offer up to the world anystory much worth the telling.In fact,the hamlet illustrates in an off-handed way one of Jack Hodgins'central convictions—that realityis often much more than what it seems—for Merville has granted usmany of the finest achievements in recent Canadian fiction.  \nAs it happens,the centre of Hodgins'fictional world is,quite liter-ally,the centre ofhis actual world:Merville is not only the site of hisown upbringing but that of his parents as well.His mother,RitaBlakely,was born in Alberta but moved to a farm in the ComoxValley as a child.His father,Stanley Hodgins,was born in Metcho-sin,British Columbia;he also came as a child to Merville,where,inthe mid-I93os,he was hired on to work for Rita Blakely's father.Like other hired men for the Blakely family,he ended up by marrying(in I937)one of the farmer's daughters.Jack was their firstborn,on3October I938,and he was followed by a younger brother and sister.All were educated down the highway at the small Tsolum schoolfrom first to twelfth grade,but his parents'stump ranch—forest-bounded,rough-cut meadows with white-faced cattle grazingaround great blackened stumps,and a simple house long withoutelectricity and indoor toilet facilities—is the principal focus for hischildhood memories.  \nJACK HODGINS  \nquiet but widely respected and trusted members of their ruralcommunity.  \nDespite his preoccupations as a beginning teacher,Hodgins wrotesteadily following his graduation from the University of BritishColumbia.Yet for eight discouraging years he received little morethan rejection slips for his efforts.In I967 he sent some work to anAmerican journal,“just to see what would happen.”Suddenly,hehad sold his first story.\"Every Day of His Life\"appeared in theNorthwest Review for February I968.This initiation was soonconfirmed by a series of acceptances from several magazines,inclu-ding The North American Review,Descant,Viva,and the Univer-sity of Houston Forum.Encouraged,he took his pen more firmly inhand(he claims to despise typewriters and will only resort to themfor later drafts),devoting more and more of his nonteaching time towriting.Later,he tried again to breakinto the Canadian market,andstories soon appeared in Wascana Review,The Antigonish Review,The Capilano Review,The Canadian Forum,Canadian FictionMagazine,and the Journal of Canadian Fiction,several of which hethen collected into his first volume,Spit Delaney's Island(I976).  \nPossessed of some new ideas and with a desire to experiencesomething of his family's roots,Hodgins gathered up his family andwent to Ireland for several months in I975.Having immersed him-self in Irish literature as a \"preparation\"for his visit,he spent histime there'listening,\"trying to catch the rhythms of Irish speechand hoping that he would come to understand the background ofsome of his own transplanted literary characters.5 While there hewrote more stories and redrafted sections of his first novel,TheInvention of the World (1977),part of which was to be set inIreland.Of his wanting to go there himself,Hodgins has saidsimply:“...the island of Ireland to me always had a kind ofromantic aura.The islandedness of
