AI literacy is crucial for teenagers (and others) to help them make informed decisions about their futures. We present our work on Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI/ML) literacy with 43 Japanese and 20 Finnish high school students, exploring their pre-existing perceptions of AI/ML and how those perceptions evolved after they trained image classification models. Our findings indicate that while a substantial number of teenagers still have limited or contradictory understanding of the topic, even short-term workshops can be effective in demystifying core AI/ML concepts when the activities are tailored to their interests. Furthermore, we find that cultural background and language may factor into how teenagers perceive AI. In recent years, an academic consensus calling for the inclusion of AI literacy education in curricula for learners of all ages has formed [11, 33, 66] . Moreover, recent legislative developments demonstrate that AI literacy is indeed quickly becoming an essential skill requirement for professionals of today and tomorrow, with the European Union AI Act of 2024 noting AI literacy considerations as a requirement for all organizations that deploy AI systems in professional use [1] . At the same time, many initiatives addressing AI literacy are being implemented globally, including major countries such as the UK, USA, Australia, and Japan [12, 19, 36] .
