Graham’s editorial remarks in the year book series address surgical practice, teaching, and clinical reasoning. IT WOULD SEEM...\n\nta. a \n2 \nIT WOULD SEEM... \n右a.8 \nTHE YEAR BOOK PUBLISHERS \n二IWENTY-SIX of the fifty-one Year Books ofGeneral Surgery have been under the wise editor-ship of Dr.Evarts A.Graham. \nOn the occasion of his retirement as Bixby Pro-fessor of Surgery at Washington University, theYear Book Publishers offer these selections fromhis editorial comments.Although a refreshing his-tory of surgery might be compiled from his edi-torials in these years,we have not ventured any-thing so ambitious.Instead we perpetuate heresome of our favorites among his remarks on sur-gery-and other matters-with the hope that hisfriends will enjoy them too and that Dr.Grahamwill forgive us. \nAlthough he is retiring as a professor he is notretiring as a teacher, and in future Year Books hewill continue to present the facts,to praise andto admonish. \nSurgery will never become a science until itspractitioners are better physiologists than theyare at present.[1929] \n动 \nIt was fortunate that the patient had thegood sense to decline having his arm amputateduntil after an x-ray examination. One wondershow there can still be practicing physicians andsurgeons who would advise a mutilating andcrippling operation without at least an adequatepreliminary examination to determine the causeof the symptoms.[1926] \nTruth is beauty even when it concerns ahemorrhoid.[1950] \nThe best treatment of shock is to prevent itbut, failing that,to treat it at its beginningrather than after it is fully developed.[1935] \nReports on the treatment of malignant tu-mors of the chest have not shown a particularlygratifying progress.[1929] \n刘 \nSimilarly,patients are sometimes subjectedto cholecystectomy when their symptoms arereally due to osteoarthritis of the spine. Also itwould be interesting to know how many bushelsof normal ovaries and uteri have been removedbecause of pain in the back.[1941] \n动 \nThese mortality and survival figures certainlydo not indicate that the Nazi philosophy im-proves surgery.[1939] \n却 \nOne admires the courage of the author inreporting these results.Otherwise the less saidthe better.More power to the American Boardof Surgery![1940] \nThere is no harm in the performance of thesevarious tricks provided the fundamental prin-ciples are not forgotten in the eagerness to ex-ploit a trivial modification of some method.[1930] \nBoth patient and surgeon have probably usedup all their good luck.An end-to-end anastomo-sis in edematous tissue with recovery!![1940] \n刘 \nA few apparently favorable clinical resultscarry no significance against the weight of allthe carefully controlled experiments which haveshown the method to be valueless.[1926] \n会 \nIn the editor's opinion it is a mistake to cre-ate separate departments of experimental sur-gery if by so doing a distinction is madebetween the experimental and the clinical sur-geon.A professor of surgery should not onlybe interested in the clinical aspect of his field, but should also have experimental interests.[1940]","cbCaic4DcZyeHsUY","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaic4DcZyeHsUY","pdf",891015,24,"English","# Selections from Dr. Evarts A.
