They won’t take orders from anyone.  \nA few other people are different. They are willing to obey. They listen to God and do what He says. Their lives are like perfume on a hot day...  \nHere are seven people. They obeyed and did good things. They could say afterward,“It is finished!”  \nA SOLDIER WHO OBEYED  \nCuba is about 90 miles south of the United States. It isan island with many forests and mountains. Spain and America were at war about the subject of Cuba in 1898.  \nThe Americans wanted some help. The American president knew that some men were hidden in the forests of Cuba. They wanted to give help to America. They were hiding from Spain. Most of the Americans had no idea how to find them. One man did. His name was Lieutenant Rowan.  \nThe president then was William McKinley. He called Mr. Rowan and gave him a letter. He told him to “carry a message to Garcia.” Mr. Garcia was the leader of the hidden men. He knew the forests and mountains and his men were clever. Rowan took the letter and wrapped it carefully to keep out rainwater and sweat. Then he strapped it over his heart  \nHe did not say,“How do I get there?” He just went.  \nFirst he spent four days in an open boat. Then he left the boat and walked into deep forest. Three weeks later he gave the letter to Mr. Garcia.  \nTo a man named Elbert Hubbard, all this was like a huge bright star. A man took an order and followed it. Mr. Hubbard wrote a story about Lieutenant Rowan.  \nThe story about Mr. Rowan and his “message to Garcia” came out in 1899. It was translated into 37 languages. Students and workers all over the world read it. How did Mr. Rowan keep safe How did he find food? How did he know where to go? It said nothing about those things.  \nThe gleaming star was that Mr. Rowan’s leader asked him to do something. And it was done.  \nMr. Hubbard says that artists should make statues of a man like Rowan. They should put them up in every college in America. There are many things that students don’t need to learn about. They just need the necessary things: to see some job to be done, care about it, and do it.  \nPretend you are a clerk, says Mr. Hubbard. Some men are with you. You ask one of them to look up a man named Corregio in the encyclopedia and bring you a short note about him. Will the man just be quiet and say “Yes”?  \n“On your life,” says Mr. Hubbard,“he will not.”  \nHe will look at you with the eyes of a fish. He’ll want to know where the encyclopedia is.“Was I hired for this kind of work?” he’ll say.“Maybe Charlie should do it.”Then he’ll ask who Corregio was and why does it matter. Maybe Corregio is dead anyway and we should be looking for Bismarck.  \nWould such messages get to “Garcia” during a war between nations?  \nMr. Hubbard wrote that one man could take care of huge sums of money. He knew many things about numbers. But nobody would hire him. He would take a message, then go have a few drinks, and forget all about it.  \nNobody could trust him. For him, there was no“Garcia.”  \nBut there are many “Garcias”, in the world, Mr. Hubbard says. Many people need a real message.  \n* * * * *  \nAre you a follower?
