Much of this 3 percent growth was associated with a 4.5 percent increase in administrations ofthe Spanish Language examination, CLEP's fastest-growing exam. Latino students turn to CLEP to earn college credit for several reasons. \nSeveral studies indicate that of all groups in the United States, Latinos may be the most sensitive to tuition costs (The Sallie Mae Fund, 2005; Pew Hispanic Center/Kaiser Family Foundation, 2004; Longerbeam, Sedlacek, and Alatorre, 2004) . The College Board offers a summary of the issues impacting Latino access to higher education(.pdf/122K) . (Requires Adobe Reader. Latest version recommended.) The author, Marcela Muñiz, expandson the reasons that Latinos maybe particularly affected by college costs: \nFirst, Latinos are extremely sensitive to tuition rates; rising tuition costs has a disproportionately detrimental effect on Latino students. Second, Latino students and their families lack knowledge of financial aid programs and availability, further placing themata disadvantage in terms of accessing college. Third, Latino students often have greater \nresponsibility than their white counterparts for financially contributing to their families. \nWe have found additional challenges in the efforts of Latinos to balance their work and college course loads. A 2008 survey of CLEP candidates revealed that 70 percent of our overall test-takers were working full-or part-time. This percentage is even higher, 76 percent, among those taking the Spanish Language examination. A higher percentage of Spanish Language test-takers also indicated that they received student financial aid—51 percent, in comparison to 36 percent of all test-takers. \nRecognition of prior learning is critical in helping these students manage tuition costs and balance work and college-level learning. Of individuals taking the Spanish Language examination, 64 percent say that they hear and speak Spanish regularly; many of these students are \"heritage speakers,\" who were raised in a home where Spanish was spoken. CLEP has allowed these students to build on their prior learning to help meet the challenges they face in completing their college education. \nIn order to better support your Latino students, you may wish to consider establishing a policy to grant credit for the Spanish Language exam, if you haven't already.
