The desire to reach hearts is wise and most possible”
Maya Angelou
We are proud that Cohuna Secondary College was one of the first schools to begin delivering The Resilience Project as part of our curriculum since 2021! Why did we do this? We saw the lack of selfconfidence and resilience in our young people and wanted to support parents in developing the resilience of their young person. The world is a much-changed place to when we were the same age. Our young people face different challenges and pressures than we did, of course there are a few familiar ones too. We use the three pillars that research suggests support positive emotions, Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM) and thus increase a person’s resilience.
However, building a young person’s resilience is not our job alone. We do this in partnership with you their parents, family members, sporting clubs and so on. Resilience is built over time. It is always a work in progress for all of us!
Student Engagement Policy
Rights and Responsibilities of Parents/Carers

| Rights | Responsibilities |
| --- | --- |
| Parents/carers have a right to expect that their children will:
• be educated in a secure environment in which care, courtesy and respect for the rights of others are encouraged;
• have opportunities for a variety of learning experiences;
• continue to develop over time;
• have their learning reported regularly and accurately throughout the year; and
• parents can expect to be welcomed at their child’s school. | Parents/carers have a responsibility to:
• promote positive educational outcomes for their children by taking an active interest in their child’s educational progress and by modelling positive behaviours;
• ensure their child’s regular attendance;
• engage in regular and constructive communication with school staff regarding their child’s learning; and
• support the school in maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment for all students. |

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land, the Barapa Barapa people, on whose land we attend school. The effects of chronic (ongoing) sleep deprivation may include: concentration difficulties, mentally ‘drifting off’ in class, shortened attention span, memory impairment, poor decision making, lack of enthusiasm, moodiness and aggression, depression, risktaking behaviour, slower physical reflexes, clumsiness, which may result in physical injuries, reduced sporting performance, reduced academic performance, increased number of ‘sick days’ from school because of tiredness, truancy. We are seeing an increasing number of young people who are chronically tired. The effect of poor sleep is clearly evident here at school. Included in this newsletter is further information about the effect of poor sleep habits and how parents might support their young person to regain sound sleep patterns.
Top sleep tips for teenagers
The typical teenage brain wants to go to bed late and sleep late the following morning, which is usually hard to manage. You may be able to adjust your body clock but it takes time.
Suggestions include:
• Choose a relaxing bedtime routine; for example, have a bath and a hot milky drink before bed, or use meditation or mindfulness a","cbCaiorM7WOFY9SF","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiorM7WOFY9SF","pdf",791626,"English","# Inside this issue
## Principal report
## Senior school update
## Key dates
## Student engagement policy
## Rights and Responsibilities of Parents/Carers
## Effects of teenage sleep deprivation
## Top sleep tips for teenagers
## Preventing sleep deprivation in teenagers – tips for parents","[{"question":"What resilience approach does the newsletter describe for supporting students?","answer":"The newsletter says the school delivers The Resilience Project and uses research-based GEM pillars: Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness to support positive emotions and build resilience over time."},{"question":"What are parents/carers expected to do according to the student engagement policy section?","answer":"Parents/carers are responsible for promoting positive educational outcomes, ensuring regular attendance, maintaining constructive communication with school staff, and supporting a safe and respectful learning environment."},{"question":"How much sleep do teenagers need, and what problems can occur with chronic sleep deprivation?","answer":"The newsletter states teenagers need between eight and 10 hours of sleep each night.
