Montgomery Watt explains the personal and academic origins of his work on Islamic revelation. It traces his initial engagement with Islam through dialogue, followed by advanced study in Jerusalem and later academic research. The preface states the book’s primary goal: presenting Islam fairly to European and American audiences and fostering constructive, non-hostile engagement. It also frames open dialogue between Islam and Christianity as requiring mutual learning while retaining one’s allegiance, with notes on Qur’anic reference conventions.","# ISLAMIC REVELATIONIN THE MODERNWORLD\n\nW.MoNTGOMERYWATT \nEDINBURGH \nat the University Press \n## PREFACE\n\no W.Montgomery Watt,1969EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY PRESS22 George Square,Edinburgh852241666North AmericaAldine not purelyacademic, but has a large personal element, for it is an attemptto state the position I have reached after over thirty years'reflection on the relationship of Islam and Christianity.Somepersonal details will thus not be out of place. \nMy interest in Islam began with a personal contact. In theautumn of I937 a veterinary student from Lahore came toshare my flat for six or eight months. He belonged to theQadiani Ahmadiyya and was rather argumentative;and thearguments which began over the supper-table aroused myinterest in the religion of Islam. Thus in a sense my contactwith Islam began with dialogue.I had the impression, too, that I was confronting not just this individual, but a wholecenturies-old system of thought. This glimpse of the pro-fundity of the problem of the relationships of Christianityand Islam fascinated me.I happened to be at a turning-pointin my career where a fresh initiative was necessary in any case.So I made a decision and set about preparations whicheventually led to me spending nearly three years in Jerusalem(then under British mandate)as an Arabic and Islamicspecialist on the staff of the Anglican bishop there. From thatappointment events produced an easy transition to theacademic work which has occupied me since I947,namely,lecturing on Arabic language and literature and researchingon various aspects of Islam as a religion. \nThere is something paradoxical in thus being immersed inan alien religion. The situation causes tensions in one's innerbeing which have somehow or other to be resolved. In myown case the resolution of the tension seems to have comeabout through moving on to a new, deeper or higher, level(as suggested on p.I25)where I am,as it were, intellectuallydetached from both religions, while continuing to practiseone.Stages in this advance to a new level are indicated by my \nbooks,The Reality of God(1957),The Cure for HumanTroubles(I959),and Truth in the Religions(I963),as wellas by passages in other books and articles. The present bookcarries the same line of thought further, though it speaksmainly, not about Christianity nor religion in general, butabout Islam. \nThe genesis of this essay may be traced back to the publica-tion of L.S.Thornton's Revelation in the Modern World inI950.I reviewed this in the Philosophical Quarterly(iii.gof.),and also planned to write an article applying Thornton's ideasto Islam. The article,in fact, was never written;and in part itsplace was taken by the books mentioned above. After theappearance of the last of these, however,it occurred to me inthe continuing process of reflection that I might write some-thing about Islamic revelation using Thornton's conceptionsas a framework. The plan gradually took shape.Itywas workedout in detail during a visit to Makerere University College,Uganda,in I967,and written rapidly in the months followingmy return.I am very grateful to Professor Noel King(now ofthe University of California,Santa Cruz)and to his colleaguesin the Department of Religious Studies,Makerere, for provid-ing such a congenial atmosphere for work. The title I havechosen attempts to acknowledge my indebtedness to LionelThornton's book. \nMy primary aim in this essay is,consonantly with soundscholarship,to present Islam in the best light possible toEuropean and American readers, both the religiously-mindedand the secular in outlook. In part this is intended to counter-act the residual effects of medieval war-propaganda,but evenmore it is an attempt to bring about a fuller realization of theimportance Islam is likely to have in the next hundred years.A secondary aim is t","cbCaipTE2rKISSvS","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipTE2rKISSvS","pdf",18609976,1,76,"English","en",105,"# Preface\n## Author’s background and
