His fellowship, which lasted from August 2022 to July 2023, involved developing a research project focusing on Islam in Southeast Asia. This book is a product of his fellowship project at PRW-BRIN. \nDuring his fellowship time, two significant events related to Islam unfolded in Indonesia. These were the summits of world religious leaders at the R20 Forum, held in November 2022, and at the ASEAN Intercultural and Interreligious Dialogue Conference, which took place in August 2023. Both forums brought together religious leaders from around the world and Southeast Asia to discuss the role of sects and religions in establishing a peaceful world order, each sharing the perspectives based on their respective faiths. \nBoth forums were organized by the Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. With Indonesia holding the presidency of both the G20 and ASEAN, these events were designed as official functions of both the G20 and the ASEAN Summits. The editors of this book, each with close connections to PBNU in various capacities, were involved in the forums, either as committee members or participants. Suaedy, in particular, served as the chair of the committee for both events. \nIt was our participation in both forums, intensified by our subsequent discussions at BRIN offices and through Zoom meetings with James B. Hoesterey at Emory University, that inspired the idea of editing a book volume that explores the intersection between “Islam, Conflict and Political Transformation in Southeast Asia.” We reviewed several recent articles and books focused on religion and Islam, as well as the socio-political changes occur","cbCaicedHORoAMU0","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicedHORoAMU0","pdf",7206762,421,"English","# Preface\n## Origins of the book project\n## International religious-leader summits in Indonesia\n## Editing motivation and analytical focus\n## Pluralism and the meaning of “Islam” in the volume","[{\"question\":\"What motivated the editors to publish this book?\",\"answer\":\"The idea originated from Ahmad Suaedy’s visiting research fellowship at PRW-BRIN, and it was reinforced by the editors’ participation in two major religious-leader forums and later discussions and collaborations.\"},{\"question\":\"Which events related to Islam influenced the book’s direction?\",\"answer\":\"The editors cite the R20 Forum summits of world religious leaders in November 2022 and the ASEAN Intercultural and Interreligious Dialogue Conference in August 2023, both convening leaders to discuss religion’s role in peace-building.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the book interpret “Islam” in Southeast Asia?\",\"answer\":\"“Islam” is not used exclusively or in isolation; it refers to Islam’s interaction with other religions, faiths, and sects within and between religious communities, including contributions from non-Islamic and non-Muslim writers.\"}]","Islam, Conflict, and Political Transformation in Southeast Asia | PDF",1061]
